Sunny here in England, very pleasant 18C or so.
Shooting all weekend, there's a competition in Chepstow on sunday for the first time in several centuries - shooting at the butts, 220 yards with military-style arrows. Catch this, Frog! Whoosh...clang!

Oh ghu! I'm flying back in a couple of days and I don't think I can stand it as cold as 18C. Unless that's the temp 4 hours after sunset?

Yes but none of the airfix stuff, strictly traditional and totally fun. Yourself, John?

I have several close friends who bow hunt. I'm not sure what traditional archers think about compound bows, but I've had the chance to shoot a compound bow numerous times and I kind of have a burn to get into it a bit more. Just the thought of bringing down big game from that close a distance....whoo hooo! You're heart could pump peanut butter.
I have another close friend who shoots a long bow and works alot with youths teaching them archery.

There's no bowhunting here in the UK, it's been illegal since about 1976. Too many scallies tramping through the woods with a beer in one hand and a compound in the other. Compounds are fascinating, everything's the other way round! I wouldn't mind having a play for a day to experience the awesome accuracy. The problem is, folks seem to get stuck on it, and then get upset when they miss, or have a bad day, or just a shot which isn't what they were expecting. Our longbows are inherently inaccurate by comparison, expectation is less, and instead of tears with a miss there are cheers for a hit. The mediaeval angle changes the picture again - the focus is on power, moving a heavy arrow a long way. Quite a few of the lads go to reenactment events and give armour-piercing demonstrations. Last year at the Agincourt festival some joker persuaded a butcher to part with some cow leg bones; the effect of heavy arrows on them was dramatic, smashed them to bits. Very different to a high velocity knitting needle with a razor blade on the end, which is effectively what the compound bow hunters use.
I guess the upshot of this is...avoid those horrible roundel Olympic-style targets, and have some fun.
<<You're heart could pump peanut butter>> I love this 🙂
