90-10 rule (Sturgeon's law - actually Sturgeon's second law: his first law is the Nothing rule)Hey - I can apply this 90% rule easily enough, but what's this obscure Nothing rule?
Originally "Nothing is always absolutely so".
In a database context that could mean either " 'It depends' should always be the answer, but whether it is may or may not depend on what the question was" or "you will sometime need a nullable column"; in a logic context it's "No two valued logic is useful for constructive thought" (or both) :-D.
Note that if Sturgeon's second law is always absolutely so then it applies to Surgeon's laws so that he must have had at least 9 laws that don't hold water; but the first law says the second law isn't always absolutely so, so maybe the second law doesn't apply in this case. We can be pretty sure of that, in fact, because he only had 2 laws and that precludes any proportion other than 0%, 50%, and 100% from being crud.

Reminds me of a maths teacher I had explaining the difference between zero and nothing.
Apparently, (according to Ms Draper) zero is a mathematical construct to enable negative numbers. John has zero apples, if he owes one to Jane, he has minus one apple. Zero is a quantity and kind of assumes the possibility of something (both positive and negative). Whereas nothing is nothing - not even the possibility of apples! Twas a long time ago and may have helped me if I'd remembered it when first learning of Null in database terms.

Barry - how's it going?
OK, how about you, Jason?
Long time no see Barry! Glad to see you back!
You too Lynn! How was your Oracular Experience? 😀
Glad it is over. I did learn a few things, but so glad to be back working with SQL Server.
Personal chit- chat is prohibited on the International Bank Transponder.
(Ok, I know I am late coming into this, but I couldn't resist the quote. I plead forced Oracle training!)
