You shouldn't mention that here - young innocents may read it.
That programming language is suitable for Kobolds and Galgenmänner and even, at a stretch, human beings(*). It was of course invented by a naval lady with the assistance of her Klabautermänner (an Admiral always has plenty of boat goblin assistants, and we can see from the language definition that their evil sense of humour was involved here).
(*) Only masochistic human beings, those needing severe punishment for their sins, and some others.
Supporting 50 year old Cobol programmes is an exquisitely horrible punishment; you can get a good DBA to do almost anything if you can threaten her with doing that as her only alternative and make it stick. This doesn't work with bad DBAs of course, because they already think in COBOL; you can tell from their over-use of cursors, variables, and while loops contolled by a counter variables and avoidance of set-based code that they really want to be able to write their queries in Cobol instead of in SQL.
