    WOTD: Intel

It is 40 years today that Intel 4004, the first commercial microprocessor, hit the market.

And the 4004 first myth is still perpetuated. Those Intel PR guys must be really good, because it was actually a poor second.

The AL1 was described in Computer Design in April 1970 - but let's not use that date, as that wasn't an advertisement for sale. However, it was in commercial use long before Nov 71 - we know that at least 4 customers had it operational in June 71. Arguments about whether it counts as a microprocessor or not are just plain stupid - it was the microprocessor used (with nothing but ROM, RAM and IO chips around it) in court to invalidate TI's attempt to patent the microprocessor concept).

We've had our warning shot which had promptly melted 2 hours later. This one might stick around a little more.
