Animal cruelty.
No, I am not from PETA but I read yesterady that waking the beast throws off his hibernation and can lead to starvation (not much growing around these parts right now!) or even freezing as it is now awake and will tend to wander from it's habitat looking for sustenance and/or shelter. Never knew that before!

True - but Phil is just a stand-in that is domesticated (don't recall the source but it makes sense).
