Here's a question for ya...
At our office we are discussing our favorite movie of all times. I stated that it was the Lord of the Rings. They said which on of the three. I said it was a single movie cause the sequels picked up exactly where the previous on stopped.
So the question goes - If had to pick my top 5 movies of all time - would you classify the Lord of the Rings as a single movie (as I do) or count it as 3 movies?

Sorry, Dude. The movies work that way because the books work that way. The books are considered a trilogy, and the movies were made as a trilogy. 3 separate works, not one whole work.
Kill Bill, on the other hand, was made as 1 film but separated into 2 parts when the movie studio refused to show it as 1 film. So both pt 1 & pt 2 would count as 1.

They are three books on my shelves, so I guess I will call them three movies. The movies (like the books) have three different names, they are not called LotR part 1 and part 2 and part 3, and that's another reason to call them three not one.

Ok - I get the 3 book idea, but - what if I used the parady by National Lampoon - Bored of the Rings? That has the completed story (all 3 books) in 120 pages of a single book? 😉
Would it now count as a single movie?
(I know I am stretching it but I do not want to use 3 slots of my top 5 movies on the Lord of the Rings.)

The Lord of the Rings is one complete part of a much bigger saga. While the books all have separate titles, when you talk to someone about "The Lord of the Rings", they know you are talking all three books. So the argument can be made that it is just one big story, split into three books to make it easier to read/cart around. After all, all three books in one big one would be a hefty book.
When talking about favorite movies, if you like all three parts of it, I would count it as one. If you only liked the first one or didn't like the second, then it gets counted separately. Personally, I had a few disagreements with The Two Towers and Return of the King, which are enough to keep it from my top 5 movies, but overall, I think it was well done (and so much better than the prior attempts).
So, I vote for counting it as one since you liked all three installments. 🙂

LOTR is an epic story spread across several books & movies. Clearly a single story, but you can count the books & movies as you like.

Inconceivable!(yes, I know what it means 😉 )
And yet, I cannot resist the temptation...
"That word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Doesn't it mean to impregnate? 😉
