Since this is the word thread and acronyms are allowed...
The word, acronym, is often confused with abbreviation. WASP is an acronym since its letters create a word. SSD, on the other hand, is just an abbreviation.

You can't pronounce SSD?? You say it the way it looks...
More precisely, it is an initialism which is a specific type of abbreviation, as acronym is also. Abbreviation is the shortening of any word or group of words. Acronyms are typically abbreviations which form pronouncable words and initialisms are a grouping of the first (initial letters) of a string of words... not to be too pedantic about it 🙂
But since most people (99.999%) have never heard of initialisms, common usage of the term acronym (however inaccurate) is generally considered acceptable and widely understood, which is, after all, the purpose of language, yes?
