  • yesterday's word here had to be calima.

    Last night was bad: breathing sand, sweating like pig, sand in hair and sticking to exposed skin (arms and face).

    Fortunately followed by very strong winds and some rain overnight - so clear air today,and warm: 38.7°C (101.3°F) in the shade at 15:00.

    They've done an awesome job and a good deal of normality has returned, though the Earthquake Commission will be out by about NZ$4bn...

    People have been so fantastic about looking after each other, it's amazing.
