Tlog is full

    Couple of database on the cluster tlog is full. I am in a new shop and the backup is done via Netapp. I can't get it up to work. What is a quick way of solving this issue? Please help.

    What are your options?

    Best way is to take a tlog backup but I'm guessing you tried that already and failed.

    Do you have a full backup somewhere? Or are you able to take one?

    Are you able to add a HD to the server?

    You really need to take a transaction log backup. It sounds like NetApp isn't doing the job. I'd get on it immediately. The only proper way to resolve the full transaction log is to run the backup.

    I can have a temp HD added and should I take full backup and restore the db to that backup? do u think that will resolve the issue though?

    Read Gail's article first.

    I was asking about most recent backup because as the ABSOLUTE last resort, there's a way to dump the log. BUT you must be able to take a full backup immediatly after that. AND I never do that unless I have a valid backup first.

    However I don't think we're there yet especially if you can add hd to the server and assuming you don't have enough room now to take a tlog backup.

    Again read Gail's article and post back if you still have issues.

    If you take a log backup. Your log file will be truncated, after truncating the transaction log backup you can shrink the log file. You don't need to restore the backup if your database is working fine.
