Tired of a problem with the site.

  • Okay, this has been happening off and on and I'm really getting tired of it.

I log into SQLServerCentral, go to Active Topics or My Account > Recent Posts and right click on a thread. Then I immediately get ACCESS DENIED!! I logout and the main window comes up with the login/logout portion still reading LOGOUT. I have to re-enter the URL to get back to the site and be able to login.

This IS NOT a timeout issue, it not happening because I'm typing a long post or not being active on the site. It's happening almost immediately. Sometimes it happens after I've been reading a couple of posts. But it always happens while I'm active in the site.

I doubt it's related, but this has only been happening since RedGate bought the site.

  • Sounds very frustrating to say the least...wish I could say I've experienced something similar...but no...not pre and not post RG...

  • It's real frustrating. I can understand the time out issue and I type long responses in notepad and then copy it over. But this is in no way a time out. Sometimes it happens just after I've logged in. I log in, go to the first message I want to see and get Access Denied. The pain is that the menu item for Log Out/Log In will always say Log Out. The only way for me to log back into the site is to close the window, open another window and get back to the site. And then the forums have 'refreshed' themselves and I see very few posts (since according to the site I was just logged in - so nothing is new since last login).

  • I encounter this same issue about once every other week. It is a bit annoying. In the past the only timethat I have received it was when updateing IE (and somehow the cookies either got deleted or corrupterd). However in the last 9-12 months it has become more problematic. I'd alread been in and out of a couple of posts and then try to jumop to another then "wham" denial. It is just an annoyance, but it is becoming more frequent.

  • SQLBill, could you make sure that your IE allows cookie? It seems I experienced exactly the same thing one month ago. But after I enabled the cookie, it works fine ever since.

  • Sorry and apologies for the issue. Not sure what's wrong, especially since the login and forums are all .NET code. We have had some session issues reading articles since that's classic ASP code.

We're working on a rewrite, so it should all be fresh and clean in about 2-3 months. We'll get a Beta site up and running probably before then. I'll see if I can get the forums coded first.

Cookies should help. I use Firefox 1.5x and IE 6 and 7, and enable cookies and never have the login issues. I have lost responses and it seems to be a time out, so I periodically CTRL-A, CTRL-C, right arrow to save my work.

  • If it is any help, I also get this specifically when I click the link in the newsletter for the answering the QOD.  The page will come up "Please Login", but the menu bar at the top says "Logout" (indicating, I assume, that I am logged in).  I use IE7, have cookies enabled, automatic login.  All other links seem to work fine as far as logging in, it is only QOD.

  • When you see the "Please Log In", have you tried F5?

I never have an issue in Firefox or IE 6 on this machine. Need to check IE 7 on the other one.

  • No, I had not thought of that.  I did that and it worked.  Thanks, Steve.
