Tick is a fossil from the times of MS DOS, possibly inspired by SCO UNIX. Back then processors were not fast enough to operate on milliseconds.

Yep. I used to use it to compare performance in VB 5. That prevented me from having to rely on the clock because I wanted finer granularity for timing.
