threshold values for performance counters

  • when i need to know the threshold for a particular performance counter such as disk queue, page life expectancy etc, i search online and usually find something, but cant find a MS page with rough threshold values.

can anyone advise if such a resource exists?

  • There isn't one hard & fast number for most of these values. Almost all of them are dependent on your particular hardware and it's configuration. But, most performance monitoring or tuning articles, blogs or books will provide some baseline numbers along with a set of caveats for applying those numbers to your circumstances.

  • Every counter has its own guidelines for thresholds, though i would suggest to see the trend and define a baseline for acceptable threshold...even what is suggested online may not exactly suite for your env...

There are lots of article if you search for "perfmon windows sql server" for relevent data with thresholds

Officially I think there are microsoft press books available which talks about perfmon on windows 2003 not sql server, though most of them do not talk about specially for sql server

Try inside series for sql server 2000 that has a chapter for perfmon and sql server counters with recommendation
