  • Hi,

we have around 120 servers in my company. my management asked me how to manage them smoothly from central location. we r using spotlight monitoring tool for around 10 servers but according to my experience this is not good may be i don't know much abt but i feel like that. could someone advice best tool for monitoring with the all features. also suggest any other best ways with scripts etc.

    thx

  • Are SQL Server native tools not satisfying your requirements? Did you try Central Management Server?

All Features??? It’s pretty vague statement.

There are many tools perform good jobs for certain features. Also they have their own editions like SQL Server (Enterprise edition has all features) so it depends on product version/edition also.

Unfortunately, I can’t guide you more on that. I am kind a biased towards Native Tools.

Few guys here extensively work on Third Part tools. Please wait until they jump in here. It’s Festival Time so you may get delayed responses.

  • In my humble opinion, the problems with the third party tools is that the users often distance themselves from the knowledge needed to successfully administer the servers. Of course, if you don't know your performance counters and DMVs, a "red disk" in Quest Spotlight may be better than nothing. However, when you start to know your performance counters and DMVs, you suddenly realize that the tool does not do anymore, since it does not give you all the information you want, and you may (as me) start to develop queries to retrieve the information that you want. Most, if not all, the information you need is actually available in to you in SQL Server, it's all about finding it and learning to understeand it.
