The Year in Review - 2009

  • To all SSCers: Fair winds and following seas in the new year.

Thank you Steve for all of your hard work.

  • To Steve and the whole SSC crew - keep up the great work! The site is a valuable resource for the professional and part-time DBAs(guilty!). Your editorials are daily reading for me! I wish you all the best in 2010!

  • No one mentioned things like the upgraded and properly working SQL Code windows on this sight. Posting and copying code was a real PITA for quite a while but the good folks behind the scenes kept after it (running from the occasional line-drive pork chop, I suppose :-P) until they nailed it. Well done to all the folks "in the kitchen". 🙂

Probably the best thing that happened to this site is something that hasn't happened... Steve Jones hasn't gone anywhere else... he's stayed right here making sure that this site is the best SQL site in the world. His editorial insights have been a big help this last year (as they always have been) and, even on those occasions where I may strongly disagree, they'll still well written, thoughtful, and though provoking.

The second best thing that happened to this site is something else that didn't happen. There were a couple of articles written by some well meaning but grossly mis-informed folks. Some of these articles (well written or not) provided for some serious public outrage and a lot of that was targeted at Steve for allowing such "garbage" to be published. A lot of people where throwing huge stones and suggested that every article go through some form of formal review process. I'm SO happy that hasn't happened... First, the requirements would scare off some of the better educated yet still timid folks who really should be writing articles and this site gives them the opportunity to do so. The second reason is that you can learn a lot even from the articles that would be of far better service in the lavatory... Their best service is to "see what's out there" insofar as how the general public thinks and may be handling problems. There's nothing like being able to have the proverbial finger on the pulse of the world and all articles, good or bad, allow us all to do just that.

The other thing is... I've seen many, many articles on "magazine" based and Microsoft based "professional" web sites that are just as full of hooie as some of those published here... they just happened to have run them through a spell checker first. 😉 I've also seen articles on this site that blow other articles away for content, accuracy, and innovation.

Good or bad, thanks to all that have had the "hair" to write an article for this site of more than a million potential readers.

The bad part for me was another job change thanks to the recession. I don't mind job changes but vacation suddenly goes away and efforts must be redoubled as they frequently are at a new job. As a result, I had to break a promise to myself and miss PASS yet again. Guess I'll have to play such things by ear instead of being disappointed in the future. I even had to stop working on the book I'm trying to write because of the changes. Fortunately, I've had some time to start working on that project again.

I'll take this opportunity to say "Thanks" to Steve Jones for the continued incredible job he's always done on this forum. I'll also take the opportunity to say "thank you" not only to the heavy hitters that I learn a little from each day, but also to those who post the most interesting SQL questions in the world right here every day. It's been an honor to learn and an honor to serve. "Pass it forward".

    Have a great 2010.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

  • A few more things that did not happen in 2009 that were good for SSC

SSC does not blacklist posters for poorly written, unresearched, or never efforted questions to the forums. This is a topic that may be debated continuously. There is good to the questions being asked no matter how versed in SQL the OP is or not. I have learned a great deal from many questions, threads, and articles on this site over the past year.

Another thing that is good that did not happen is the formal review process for the QOD. Along the same lines as the article point made by Jeff, I think a formal review would hinder some of the growth and thinking by members on this site. Some questions are bad in the eyes of some, but insightful to others. Some questions are worded poorly - and so are many business requirements.

Steve is doing a fantastic job on this site.

  • It's been an interesting year for me (Thread-heads will know exactly what I mean). SSC being a stable point in an often tumultuous environment is definitely one of the positive things.

Have to agree with Jeff and Cirque about some of the best "not here" things.

  • Thank you Steve, SSC, and members.

With my new job in 2009 I inherited a mess of a database(s). Thanks to you all, I have been able to work through it. Happy New Year everyone.

  • Thanks a lot for the kudos and praise. I appreciate it, but all of you add a lot to the site as well.

I agree with all of the above and thanks to Steve, Red Gate and all for keeping SSC fun place.

    Kind regards,
