Lowell - Thursday, May 18, 2017 10:29 AMRay K - Friday, January 20, 2017 9:36 AMSo I got the email for SQL Saturday #627 in South Florida. Half-kiddingly, I looked up airfares from Albany, NY to Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- and discovered, much to my surprise, that they are ridiculously cheap right now! I said to myself, "this might actually be do-able!" and now, I'm thinking about submitting to it!So for those of you who've previously attended the South Florida SQL Saturday, how is it? Should I spend the money on a plane ticket? Should I submit my presentations? (Note: my presentations tend to be geared more toward the professional development track.)
I have a friend down there who has already told me that he would buy me dinner if I make the trip. 🙂
Hey Ray, June 10th is right around the corner, and Diana Betancourt, myself and a few other solid volunteers are running this years South Florida SQL Saturday. We got about 1000 registrations last year, and somewhere between 600 and 900 attendees,
depending on how you count them.. the sum of registrants @ vendors vs scans @ the door, (not everyone registered at the door and just walked in, but many scanned to try and win a prize)
We have a strong group of sponsor for this event, mostly thanks to Diana,
we are well over 500 registrations already for this year, and will meet or exceed last years numbers,So it's a big event, held at Nova Southeastern University. We also have two Pre Conference sessions:
- Advanced SQL Server Capabilities in SQL 2016 by Pankaj (PJ) Satyaketu and David Pless from Microsoft
- Design & Implement SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solutions by Edwin Sarmiento
if you read the details, so excellent deep dives for a $120 precon.
There's a "So you Think You Can Speak" competition, and a lot more. It's one of the better events I've ever attended, which is why I'm helping this year.
http://www.sqlsaturday.com/627/eventhome.aspxLet me know if I can help!
Oh man. I ended up not submitting to #627. Now you're making me wish I had! I was thinking about it, until Philadelphia came up, so I put in for that one instead.
Alas, my wife won't let me travel to back-to-back SQL Saturdays! 🙁 I suppose if you wanted to help, maybe you can talk her into letting me go? ("Can Ray come out and play?") 🙂

Sorry, but going to be at SQLSaturday #700 in Colorado Springs this weekend. Sort of have to be since I am one of the directors of the Colorado Springs SQL Server Users Group. Not speaking, just haven't had much time to even think about any kind of presentation.

Woo-hoo! Found out that I've been picked to speak in New York City!
This one is a big deal for me! I've been trying (unsuccessfully) for a couple of years to get in to speak at NYC SQL Saturday! And now I'm finally in!

For the benefit of people who've never been to a SQL Saturday, I wrote this 'blog article that talks about what SQL Saturday is about. Give it a read and let me know what you think!

Won't be going to any SQL Saturday this weekend, but I will be driving to, and from, Providence, RI starting next Saturday. Going to be hauling some furniture out for my daughter. She and her boy friend fly in for the week on Saturday so the will be with me on the drive out. Kylie will be with me on the drive back. She has an internship in Broomfield this summer.

Damn... unfortunate timing for sure. I'll be in RI during the last full week of June.

I've submitted the following 2 abstracts to Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, Denver, and Pittsburgh.
“Black Arts” Index Maintenance #1: How the “Best Practice” Methods are Silently Killing Performance
Most people don’t know it but the current “Best Practice” Methods are actually the leading cause of perpetual logical and physical fragmentation, costly and continuous “Bad” page splits, comparatively insane amounts of log file generation and, in an interesting “Catch 22”, the whole reason for why we have to do so much index maintenance.
This isn’t your typical presentation on Index Maintenance.
In this first of two back-to-back sessions on the subject, we’ll explore what happens to an index in the first year of its life for four different common Fill Factors along with how “Best Practice” methods executed once per week and once per day have their way with you, your indexes, your log files, wasted memory, and the performance of your code even if it’s perfect code.
“Black Arts” Index Maintenance #2: Better Methods that Can Actually Prevent Fragmentation for Weeks.
In this second of two back-to-back sessions, we’ll learn of three incredibly easy modifications to your Index Maintenance routines to actually prevent fragmentation for weeks rather than perpetuating it, virtually eliminate “Bad” page splits, reduce wasted memory, make your log file and log file backups a whole lot more happy, and increase the overall performance of even perfect code.
We’ll also learn that no simple method is a panacea and what to do about the horror of expAnsive updates.
I really wanted to go to many others like KY, TN, Albany, Madison, and Sioux Falls, but I'm getting a bit old for 10 hour drives each way and, since I have no sponsors (and frankly don't know why anyone would sponsor me because I don't use 3rd party products except for occasional use of SQL Compare), can only afford about 1 plane trip a year.

Heading the SQL Sat LA in a few weeks.
The only other one I have on the agenda now for the US is Pittsburgh. Louisville/BatonRouge/Sioux Falls/Lincoln up in the air, depending on family plans. Oslo/Cambridge on my list if I get picked.
