The Last iPhone

I really like this blog and often use the site for learning new things so a massive thanks for the work you do on it.

I just don't understand the point of todays post though. I thought the world was going to end without a headphone socket on the new iPhone but the box comes with a headphone to lightning adaptor so turns out you can just carry on as before. Looks like it was just a mole hill after all.

The point was that change and upgrades can affect customers. If you didn't read past a new phone, I'm not sure what to say. This was an analogy, pointed out in the piece, that what you might perceive as an improvement might not be what your customer thinks

I've gone through that plenty, I never liked the windows 8 interface, I wasn't a fan of that Ubuntu Unity interface (RIP LOSER DESKTOP), I don't like the office ribbon, ssms seems to get randomly unstable depending on releases, and OMG they put that idiot tiles interface on windows server and I've seen even the most fanatical windows admin cuss at that one.

I think Microsoft could have put a switch that would allow the old interface in and since they're going to do the telemetry thing no matter what, they could then easily measure how many folks switched back to the old interface and then made a decision accordingly, but unfortunately and as usual, the companies behind the products believe they know better and I guess old obstinate guys like me just have to put up with that sort of thing and in summary I'd like to ask you all to get off my lawn.

As for Steve deciding to ditch iPhones over the lack of a headphone jack, I can understand the choice.  Sure, you can get / they come with a dongle to connect a headphone to the Lightning jack, but he doesn't feel like having to keep track of an extra piece to use his headphones.

AirPods.  Cut the wires out of your life Steve! 🙂

    Steve,
I recently switched from iPhone to Android and back again.

I've gone back and forth a few times. I agree with you on the extra clicks/taps at times. Other times, I think there are better shortcuts and changes in Android.

My view is that there is room for a wide variety of different hardware and software configurations. I think this is one way I hope software evolves and finds a better way for upgrades and changes to avoid removing old features. I know some UI/ergonomic/navigation items are likely to need to upgrade, but removing features ought to be something avoided with the growth of hardware that can accommodate old code. Likely support effort will prevent this in some cases, but we'll see.

I like larger phones, especially as I age. Couldn't imagine going back to a 4" screen. I'll leave my Android thoughts to my blog, and not here, since I know it's just an opinion and most people have their own.

I'd like to think my attitude towards technology parallels the Marines mantra...
    Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome.
Currently, my personal phone is an Android (Google Pixel XL) and I'm quite happy with it.  My work-provided phone is an iPhone 6s, and I'm OK with it.  There are things I kind of like in iOS, and things I prefer in Android.  I spent the time sorting out how to do what I need with the iPhone and don't bother complaining about the things I don't like.

It's the same thing with software such as SSMS.  At work I have no choice but to use SSMS 2014, while at home I have SSMS 17.X  It takes some getting used to, but it's not really that big a deal to me.

If my work suddenly decided we had to run Linux instead of Windows on our desktops, then again, improvise, adapt, and overcome.

As for Steve deciding to ditch iPhones over the lack of a headphone jack, I can understand the choice.  Sure, you can get / they come with a dongle to connect a headphone to the Lightning jack, but he doesn't feel like having to keep track of an extra piece to use his headphones.  Someone else will feel differently, that this isn't enough of an issue to cause them to switch phones.  To each their own.

Mostly how I feel. After a few days, I've mostly adapted to things, miss others, but I'll get by. I have the Pixel XL as well and it's a nice phone.

  • Rather than paying $$$ for the latest phone, you can just reach into the recycle bin at Whole Food and grab the previous model still in good condition. There are folks who upgrade their phone every year and toss the "old" one like it's an empty soda pop can.

  • I too really like the look and feel of the iPhone 6 but so far haven't had a good enough reason to give up my current iPhone 5.

The fingerprint reader and faster response were what mattered to me. That and a larger size (I'm getting old).
