To answer Jamie's question about Analysis Services, I'll point you to Project REAL (the overview) which describes ~10-billion rows of fact data in the Phase 1 implementation. The specifics of the online bookseller data can be found in the technical overview. [Steve, it also discusses specific hardware by name, if you're interested. ]
I wasn't able to locate any public commentary on the use of Analysis Services by the MSN search engine, so there's not much I can say there at the moment.
I like drnetwork's theory about disinformation. It tracks for me. The administration makes a big show about being enraged about "the leak" and continues to tickle the public commentators who make much ado about nothing... over a database that may or may not exist. Heh. That would be as good a scam as Reagan pulled on the USSR with "Star Wars" and SDI. There are reliable reports that bin Laden stopped using electronics of any kind because of rumors that we were tracking him via the satellite phones he used and resorts to much slower human couriers for communication. Sun Tzu would be especially proud if it turns out that we weren't tracking him at all, but just wanted to eviscerate his communications infrastructure.

David,
Chris Webb has pondered a bit about it here: http://spaces.msn.com/cwebbbi/blog/cns!7B84B0F2C239489A!559.entry
and I was speaking to a guy I know at on the SQL Server team in Redmond a few weeks ago and he was telling me that a number of people from the Analysis Services team have moved to MSN. I think that's what he said anyway - it was a throwaway comment and it was at the end of a long, boring, week
You didn't hear this from me!!!

Thanks for the reference. I know Project REAL was a big deal and I think its a great win. I wish Microsoft would do a few more like that.

Reference phone tracking for divorce etc - you've got to identify the phone first as when they are trying to cover up the affair they buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card and put it in an old phone and don't register it at all!
Been there, had it done, got the ex.!!

It's a great discussion but possibly in vain ... I just heard on the radio (yes 'old' fashioned news radio) that Bell South is asking for a retraction from USA today. Their contention is that it never happened and feel the story is unsubstantiated. USA Today is standing by their story.
