When I was going in IT, if you could spell VB, you COULD get a job. If you could get a few letters after your name (first, CNE, then MCSE), you also could get a good paying job. Which was scary.
My first programming job was using Clipper, sort of a cross between C++ and dBase that ran under DOS.

I got my start in Phone Support and then Network Admin and then into Database.
I think Connections can be a very useful conference. Good luck and enjoy yourself.
