The best SQL Server Administrator training?

  • I found this one.

Does anyone know if there is a training resource that is simply the best DBA training available?

    If so, please reply.

    Thanks.

  • I'm not sure you'll find the "best" as that requires a lot of subjectivity. SQLSkills is run by some amazing people and both Paul Randal and Kim Tripp are excellent speakers and trainers. I have heard wonderful things about this training, and I'd like to go if I could work it into my schedule.

The training depends somewhat on what you are trying to get out of it. This is an in depth training course that dives into the details of how things work. They are going to assume you understand something about SQL Server and have some familiarity with the software. They are teaching you best practices and why, not necessarily how to do it.

If you are looking for basic, practical, how do I do these admin tasks, then I own part of a training center in Orlando at SQLShare (http://www.sqlshare.com/training/publicclasses.aspx). We do mentoring there to help you learn practical, how to knowledge.

Solid Quality Learning (http://www.solidq.com/Pages/WelcomePage.aspx) also has classes, and some very good trainers.

  • Piling on a little bit, I think Steve sells himself a little short. Basically, if I wanted to learn something in or around SQL Server, he lists the three sources I'd hit. SQLShare, SQL Skills and Solid Quality really are the top of the bunch. Yeah, there's going to be some level of drill down from Paul, Kim & Brent over at SQL Skills that others might not hit, but you're going to get SSIS ninja skills from SQLShare or Itzik will fill your head full of T-SQL until your ears bleed over at Solid Q, so each has serious strength.

  • Thank you both.

I really wanted to know this. I don't like spending company $$ on basic tutorial training which seems to be more the norm in M$ training classes.

    Sincerely,

    Alan.

  • None of the 3 I have listed used the MOC curriculum, for the reasons you mentioned.

I would inquire all three, ask for detailed information, or even call/email. Everyone should be happy to provide you with details.

Good luck, and you are welcome.

  • Just a quick follow up.

I decided to go with SQLSkills, the HA/DR and the Dev Support/Sec/PS class.

    I'll be there in August.

    Alan.
