The best method for reading books

  • Please answer me because your method in reading and learning will help me greatly

  • I hate reading e-books, but that is what I do the most.

Whenever I get some issues, I do a look-up in the internet or in some e-book which I have.

Additionally there are a lot of free e-books provided in the SQL Server Central which I can read in my PC only.

  • Technically, I haven't yet purchased any SQL books for it but since I got my Kindle it is my favorite way of reading most books -- it is compact; light; can hold a bunch of books; lets me set electronic bookmarks; and I can hold it in one hand or sit it on a table and flip pages with the push of a button. The only thing it isn't great for is stuff that can't be reformatted on the fly (e.g. diagrams) or which require color. Photographs don't work that well either. But text generally works very well so I expect that books on SQL and databases should work well -- the one thing that concerns me is code examples. Hopefully the formatting will be preserved and I will only have to deal with scrolling issues but if they are treated as text and the formatting is changed to fit the screen, that's going to be a deal-breaker.

  • I very much prefer reading actual paper books instead of e-books. In real books, you can flip around and use fingers to hold a spot or two before continuing; in e-books you have to rely on creating bookmarks that you'll never use again.

Web pages are the best computer viewer for me, but I prefer HTML instead of PDF or some proprietary format.

All that being said, I must admit that I read mostly non-fiction and technical books. I suppose reading a store from start to finish would be different. Years ago when I read science fiction, there was something awful nice about curling up with a good book, but I've not even tried to read a fiction book on a computer of any type.

  • For recreational reading, I love my kindle. For technical/learning, I prefer a physical book, much easier to search for certain information or reading the book non-sequentially.
