The Beer Cooler Thread

  • ACinKC (6/5/2012)

How 'bout Sammy (Samuel) Smith's Oatmeal Stout? Around here (Kansas City), Freestate Brewing (Lawrence, KS) has an Oatmeal Stout that is really good, too (and a nice restaurant right on Mass Street to enjoy it in!).

A friend I used to work with created a sorghum-based beer called Bard's Beer that's good, especially if you're a celiac and can't drink other grain-based beers. I like it because it doesn't inflame my metabolic arthritis (AKA gout) the way most non-amber, non-stout types (like the swill that comes from St. Louis and Milwaukee) do.

I really like that oatmeal stout at Freestate. The Ad Astra Ale is also pretty nice when you want something a little hoppy. πŸ˜›

I like a home brewed double chocolate stout made using a kit from the Home Brewery.

Is Jimmy Carter still a hero to American home brew drinkers, or has that change in the law that he pushed for been forgotten?

(Home brewing was illegal until 1978, I think.)

Very astute of you to know that Tom. When people say that Jimmy Carter never accomplished anything as POTUS I have to inform them that that is clearly not the case.

And Jimmy Carter is a very accomplished woodworker. Being one of my hobbies along with beer (although mixing them is not a great idea), I would love to be as skilled as he in the woodshop someday.

I will never moan about taxes again!!

me neither, thought 20% was bad

I would give my left kidney to have only 20% πŸ˜€

Move to the UK then Koen

For all your lovely food? No thanks πŸ˜€

Food is what you make it, but yeah some of the stuff you get can be a bit, how to say, .....

Anyway back on topic, I have a home brew ginger beer kit which I got for Christmas, which I am thinking of starting in the next few weeks, but once done, what do you think should be my next home brew Local Home Brew Store[/url] choices from the local stores selection would be greatly appreciated (nothing Stout'y or dark).

How about a Yellow Dog Pale Ale.

Not fair Anthony...tequila is my favorite drink. At four, I'm ususally just getting started. . . .

Just continue the count, and it will get you floored in due order. πŸ˜€

Yeah, around 12 and I'm hitting my limit.

But I sure do like my tequila...so I guess it's a good thing I live in Arizona where I can get all kinds of tequilas.

Thanks Cliff, unfortunatly that site is US only, so wont be applicable to myself.

Anyway for a 4 day weekend you would of thought copious amounts of alcohol where consumed, but no, I had 2 bottles of Crabbies yesterday after a long day of wallpapering and that was it, quite shocked actually, thought more would of been consumed.

Sure! Just an idea as the Yellow Dog is a nice pale ale. This is a really cool home brew supply shop that is across the highway from us. They ship all over the world.

  • I will have to take a look when I get home then and see if there is somewhere local where I can get hold of some

  • As Asda have a 2 for Β£3 deal on ale, I thought it would be rude of me not to pick up a few new ones to try and I have to say I wasn't disapointed.

The first was Well's Banana Bread beer, that was a good drink, but the one that topped it for me was Wychwood's take on Ginger Beer, called Ginger Beard, its a not so sweet but more gingery version of Crabbies and went down a treat, I think I may have been converted from Crabbies to Ginger Beard, now on the next trip to Makro I will be on the lookout.

Here in Reading, Waitrose has by far the best selection of ales, followed by Morrison's and Sainsbury's. Asda trails a long way behind, although their own Gentleman Jack is surprisingly good (Shepherd Neame I think).

    If Waitrose ever do a 2 for Β£3, I'll borrow a pickup.

  • I'll second that with Waitrose, nearest one is in Manchester city center and is quite small so the selection is limited, other than that the biggest one is in Cheadle. Used to work in Waitrose to get through uni so have quite a good fond memory of the selections they have.

Bank Top, thats the local brewery to me (about 3 mile away from home), have sampled many of their delicious delights.

  • Looking at what they've done I can (vaguely) remember sampling a flat cap and a gold digger while drinking in your fine town before partaking in the watching of association football πŸ™‚
