Kind of read my mind in the previous post I added on the other editorial.
I use HackerRank.com for a number of languages I use. I really like it and have actually streamed my challenges on TwitchTv. I've bumped into some interesting engineers over the past few months who frequently watch others and like to jump in on the challenges with you.
Unfortunately, the database section of the site is not that great. They are still working on it, but it does offer a good amount of complex SQL challenges too. I've used it primarily for Python and C++.
Being I work mostly in data science these days, I feel short programming challenges or competitive programming does help you stay on your toes in that field and help me retain more of the language when not using it at work.

I think this is a very good idea, Steve. When I was laid off of my previous job in 2014 I began an earnest job search. That lead to several interviews. What surprised me the most was just how prevalent a small programming task became in the overwhelming majority of interviews. I sought out various self-testing websites to do challenges in order to sharpen my problem solving skill. I consider it one of the best things I did, even while I was unemployed. And I still do one every now and then. It's good to challenge yourself.
Kindest Regards, Rod Connect with me on LinkedIn.

This is a terrific idea! I never knew anything like this existed. I would love to learn other languages as well as enhance my current skill set, but my problem is I can never come up with ways to practice so, once I'm done with the examples in the book or website I use, I don't have anything to practice. I'm really excited to find out there are sites out there that can help me do that.
Since I am most interested in databases, if you could have one here on this site, that would be great. Heck, I may even pay for something like that.

I would recommend it being outside the points system but I am probably wrong.

There are already two excellent sites that look like a lot of fun. They'll definitely come in handy to help me with my New Year's resolution to watch less TV. I can see myself getting engrossed in these problems for hours.
Thank you all for your suggestions. And if you have others, I would love to hear about them!

I agree. Outside of current points.
I'm thinking to make it regular, but also something people could pick up anytime and work on.

Sounds good. There could be some interesting discussions around solutions.
