Terabyte database backup/restore

  • I agree with you, but as per the application criticality and Organization concepts. Some of the things you only can suggest, that is not in your hand, but something you have to mange.

The Concept behing the organization also, they will do the snapshot of the DB weekly basis.

  • We use LiteSpeed to backup a 2TB db to local disk in about 2.5 hours. We do weekly full and daily diff since the db is in Simple recovery mode. I don't have any experience with other 3rd party backup tools but I have heard SQL Backup from Red-Gate works as well and is less expensive.

  • I use Litespeed to backup one of our 200gb databases. I also use Idera SQLSafe to backup several other multi-gb databases we have. Both do a good job in both speed and compression of backups.

I backup to a NAS device and typically use 3 threads during a backup. I do have do be careful about scheduling the backups among the various servers otherwise I seem to have some IO issues - I don't know if the NAS or switch is overwhelmed by the volume of data being pumped out - just know that I had the occasional backup failure until I spread the jobs out.

I also agree with the the previous comment about backing up TB+ databases. I think if I had to backup something as large as that, I would be looking at some other type of solution - not Litespeed, SQL safe, or Redgate; as good as they may be.

  • I would like to say, it's all depend on the organization policy/Cost.

Agree. There must be different ways to do it. I am interested in all possible alternatives/options.

BTW, how long does it take to back up the backup file to tape? how big is the backup file?

Litespeed will compress upto 1/3rd of the space for the backup file. Again it depend which tape backup you are looking for. As I mentioned in my previous comment for 200GB it will take approx. half an hour to disk and from disk to tape it would take approx. an hour so.
