tempdb question

  What is the rule of thumb for creating tempdb data files? Some one told me it was per core in the machine but I need a some other opinions...

  ie...

  4 cores;

  tempdb.mdf

  tempdb1.ndf

  tempdb2.ndf

  tempdb3.ndf

  tempdb_1.ldf
