I need some help understanding the benefit of creating tempdb with one file per processor. I believe the benefit has something to do with the way SQL Server utilizes processor threads, but I'm a bit weak on the details. Also, does the benefit change based upon the type of RAID configuration or are they completely independent?

Here are two links discussing the proposed configuration. The explanation is a bit over my head so I need to do some research. I'm also curious if this only applies when tempdb is over 5GB as indicated in the second link. If you open the links search for "round robin".
