We have a tempdb disk on a sperated disk from other databases. It is on a SAN drive with random I/O
I know it is a good practice to create multiple files for temdpb the same number as cores if less than 8 cores on the server.
But is it still beneficial to performance if it is a random I/O disk instead of sequential I/O
Thanks

I don't know about what you ask?
So "A SQL Server DBA myth a day: (12/30) tempdb should always have one data file per processor core"

The need of mutiple files is to reduce contention on certain key system pages in the data file.
I must admit that as a habit I dont create these extra files unless there is an issue. Too many shops wont know what to do if things start going wrong so why add unnecessary chaff that will distract from the actual issue?
