tempdb data file does too large

  • Hi, there,

I am new to this forum and i am also new to SQL serevr. I just found the tempdb data file size of my one of SQL server 7.0 databse is growing to 19.7 GB. Why this happened and how can I reduce the size.

    Thank you in advance!

  • Don't reboot your server. That's not necessary (but it will work). A quick way to 'reclaim' the tempdb space is to stop the MSSQLSERVER service and restart it.

  • I have never had to do this except once when I had a corrupt tempdb it grew. If the other suggestions do not work the stop the SQL service delete the tempdb's files, then restart SQL. It will be rebuilt automatically which is what is supposed to happen with stop and restart but for some reason if corrupt does not. Also make sure you are at at least SP2 as I seem to recall that was my solution for the cause. ANd keep in mind that tempdb is built based on size of other databases (I forget the entire details but I will post if I can find them).

  • I re-started the server and the tempdb file reduced to 8MB. Thank you to every one.
