TempDB

  • I was pondering moving empdb to reside in memory. Running SQL 2000 SP3 on advance server with 8 G memory.

The memory is not being used to full capacity and I was wondering if moving tempdb to RAM would give us any performance gain.

I'm new to the idea and am just looking for some feedback of whether to even consider this path or not. And things to be careful of.

    Thanks

  • I wish I knew...I'm going to follow this thread and hopefully some good input will be found 🙂

Neat question...not even sure how you could get it into memory..

  • Does that option even have an effect in SQL2k? I thought it was already in ram in versions > 6.5?

  • Yes you are correct, didn't read close enough on the version chart.

It is no longer a supported option.

  • Configuration Options in BOL:

tempdb in ram placed the tempdb database in RAM, if needed. No longer supported because SQL Server 2000 has been optimized for maximum performance.

Remove all references to tempdb in ram.

Dr. Peter Venkman: Generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance.
