What I thought was the best guidance I saw (it must have been up here somewhere) was to observe usage to estimate tempdb required, divide this equally between the files you create, and leave just one file with autogrowth on, partly to protect from running out, partly to let you monitor for increased demand. That looked neat and tidy to me.
