TCP/IP Listening Ports and Enterprise Manager

  • Hello,

I only seem able to register a MSDE 2000 Instance from my Desktop Enterprise Manager using TCP/IP port 1433 on the Server.  When I change the port using the Network Utility to another valid number not being used by something else, then bounce the database and then try to re-register the database, I am unable to register it.

Has anyone any experience of this, I presume I am doing something stupid or missing a fundamental point of changing the port on which a database listens for connections, therefore my connection attempts are failing on any port other than 1433.

    Thanks in Advance

  • Check that the 'SQL Server browser' service is running on your SQL Server.

  • Where is the SQL Server browser ? Thx.

  • It should be listed in Administrative Tools->Services. Start it a and make sure it is set to start automatically. If its not there then you must be using a version of SQL Server that does not have this.

  • If you have problems connecting from the client PC use the cliconfig.exe application on the client PC to create an alias. Set this up as a tcp ip connection and enter you port number. The alias name can be the same as you SQL server (instance) if you want it to.
