I've got a fairly new HP ML370 G4 with Microsoft Server 2003 R2 with a fresh install of SQL 2005 and all service packs installed. I'm trying to create a backup device for the an external HP DAT 40 and tape is greyed out as an option. The tape drive is seen by MS Server 2003 device manager and by NTBACKUP. I can backup using that program. Why doesn't SQL 2005 see it?
Thanks,

This seems like a known issue. Here are some instructions we received from Microsoft how we confirm and fix that problem.
1. Start the registry editor, click Start | Run , write 'regedit' click [OK].
2. Check if you have a key similar to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port 2\Scsi Bus1\Target Id 5\Logical Unit Id 0]
3. If you do have a value named "DeviceType" with the value "TapePeripheral". Change this to "Type"="TapePeripheral

That was it!
I now “magically” have the option to add a tape device.
Tested it and all is good.
Thanks Bart!

Hi,
this change will reverted by the next reboot. Responsible is the driver of your tape device.
Ask your hardware vendor for an updated driver.

Well, you were right,
I had to reboot the machine today and the tape option is grayed out again.
I downloaded the latest drivers from Sony but no change, I just hacked the registry again so for now it seems to be working.
The drive is an old SDT-9000 DAT-3 drive I guess I’ll have to replace it.
Thanks guys,
