I don't love government intervention, but I do think it's needed in cases. Not here, but I do believe this is bad for baseball: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9109596/alex-rodriguez-make-more-houston-astros-combined-salary
The long, guaranteed contracts without limits, overall, doesn't help the sport. I would prefer that we somehow balance things out a bit more. Not sure if I'd do what football does, but I'd do something.

We could start by giving guys like Scott Boras the Pete Rose treatment and ban them from baseball. Dude said Oliver Perez was the next Sandy Kofax and got him and his 6.00+ ERA $12 mil a year with the Mets.

Opening Day!
First, went to the Yankees/Nationals game on Friday. Good fun. Kinda weird to hear NY fans yelling "YOOOOOOOOUK!". Got to see some future hall of famers play. Got to see Ichiro play, something I've always wanted to see.
Some great baseball on Monday. A few upsets and a few blowouts. Yu Darvish's almost perfect game (d'oh!). Harper's back to back jacks. And Boston beat NY 🙂
Payroll issue
I say leave it. It's like a business with supply and demand. If A-Rod can find someone to pay him 29 mil/yr, good for him. If a team is smart enough to say the product isn't worth the asking price, they pass. If they gobble 'em up like he's the last ball player on the planet, well then shame on them for being irresponsible with their money.
Looking at last year's salary standings and final w/l standings 6 of the top 10 teams had a salary under 85mil. Washington (81mil) and Cincinnati (82mil) finished 1 and 2 (NY in 3rd with 197mil). Sure, you can make an argument that you can buy championships or wins but I wouldn't say that it's a given. Lots of teams find a way to stay competitive without spending over 200mil, they just need a strong farm system and a creative coach.
As for Scott Boras, he's not an agent. He's a salesman. And it looks like Jay-Z wants a piece of that action as well.

Why a decimal(5,3) for all the averages?

Ya, I saw that, I just didn't want to login to another account to have to post a comment on the original post. More a question to myself I guess. The OPS can be the highest of any of those values and the highest that can be is 5.000. Unless they have some strange rules in their softball league. 😛

Recap
We're 25 games in and Boston is looking good (we need a best-record-in-baseball emoticon!)
New York isn't doing so bad, not as bad as everyone thought they would with their list of broken players. I'm actually surprised with Toronto. Not sure if they've just had a tough schedule but they did a lot of buying during the off-season and it's not showing up in their record.
Detroit in the central is on par with KC. I'd think with all their firepower and pitching they would be doing a little better within their own division.
Texas fans are loving the Angels right about now. 9-15, yikes. And to the Astros... welcome to the AL, you're as good as Miami.
I think the NL upset is Atlanta really giving it to Washington. So much hype around the nats, predictions of pennants and world series appearances. And here they are, in second. They have a huge 4 game series in Atlanta starting today through Thursday. They could either put a hurtin' on the Braves or shoot themselves in the foot and lose a lot of ground to them in the standings.
Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Cincinnati are all pretty tight in the NL Central.
Arizona and Colorado are tied atop the NL West.
Overall, there is some pretty good races going on this year. Still a long way to go!

Definitely a long way to go. Texas was 17-8 after 25 games last year and the Angels were 10-15. Look how that worked out for both of them! 😛 Like the old saying goes, you can't win a division in April, but you certainly can lose one.
And for some humor, The Onion had a pretty funny article[/url] about the Yankees the other day.

Yea, it isn't how you start, it is how you finish. Games in April count just as much as ones in Sept though. Sometimes one game is all that seperates a few teams at the end.
My Reds have 4 guys on the DL... #4 hitter goes down on opening day and is out till July and #1 starter is on the DL too. Not a good way to start the season.

How about Choo though? 0.492 on base percentage at the end of April. :w00t: That is incredible.

Unbelievable on base percentage.... He is making a case to be the #1 Free Agent in the off season.

CO is leading the division, so I'm not sure how much we count a month of baseball. A few year ago the Yanks were 10 out at the All Star break and made the playoffs.
