Talking baseball

  • oh man!

I'v been away for a bit, again.

Voluntary pitchers and catchers (and injured players i.e. Boston 2012 roster) report today! And 10 days until the first spring training game! What do you consider the start of spring training, pitchers and catchers report or the first game?

Napoli, who signed with Boston for 3/39mil, failed his physical and agreed to 1/5mil deal. He has a degenerative hip disease, same one as Bo Jackson, and was justification to alter his contract. One thing I don't like is that he shows up to spring training with a Texas Rangers equipment bag. The guy can't afford a new one? c'mon man!

I'm getting pumped for opening day already!

  • Yeah, that's just bad luck. First at-bat for the year and BAM. Done for 2 1/2 months. Luckily there's another month of spring training left to absorb some of the rehab.

  • I just bought a pair of tickets to Yankees vs. Tampa Bay on June 23 -- which also happens to be Old Timer's Day!!! :w00t:

  • ha! old timer's day. I tried finding out what the promotion is but no dice. Man, there's an endless number of possibilities of what to do to celebrate old timers.

I'm super excited for the season to begin. It seems like everyone is just getting hurt in spring training, they should just make the season 200 games and start in February!

My son turned 2 in February and I can not wait to bring him to his first game!!! Maybe he'll be happy for a few innings until we need to go. Does anyone else have experience bringing their kids to the ballpark for the first time?

  • The reputation Crawford built isn't getting any better. Sorry LA, I could have told you it was a 100 million dollar mistake to sign this guy.

  • Opening day for a couple teams is Sunday with the rest coming on Monday.

With the off-season spending by Toronto and the post surgery recovery unit that is the New York Yankees, the AL East is looking pretty tight right now.

What are you opening day plans?!

Just going to have to listen to my Cubbies on the radio while at work. I might be able to skip away at lunch to catch part of the game on tv. I will also be trying not to get my hopes too high. 😀

  • Hoping to check score once in a while.... My Red's aren't looking good at all in Spring Training.... 9-18. Hope they get better when the bell rings and the games start to count.

I will be keeping an eye on them. Not just because they are in the same division as my team, but I watched Billy Hamilton play his rookie ball here in Montana and am pretty excited to see if (or more likely when) he cracks the big league club this year.

Ah, understood. I cannot WAIT to see him on the Major League roster. I love seeing base stealing. I grew up in the 70's watching Joe Morgan, Lou Brock and them and love that aspect of the game. It has gone away over the last 20ish or so years in favor of getting on base and waiting for the home run.

  • Base stealing is fun, indeed. Should happen quite a bit more with the removal of the fake to third throw to first pick-off move. Not so sure I agree with taking away that move though, gotta give the righties some love.

I bought the subscription for the MLB premium. I'll be watching games on my phone/computer 😀 For $130 I think it is a great deal.

I missed it... is MLB banning the third to first fake throw thing? I always thought that was a dumb thing.

  • No plans here. Rockies don't open until Fri and I'll be in Omaha that weekend.

Skipping this year, though I may watch some of the first game Sun night.

Looks like they haven't updated their rules yet

    8.05(c)

A pitcher is to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base but does not require him to throw (except to first base only) because he steps. It is possible, with runners on first and third, for the pitcher to step toward third and not throw, merely to bluff the runner back to third; then seeing the runner on first start for second, turn and step toward and throw to first base. This is legal. However, if, with runners on first and third, the pitcher, while in contact with the rubber, steps toward third and then immediately and in practically the same motion ?wheels? and throws to first base, it is obviously an attempt to deceive the runner at first base, and in such a move it is practically impossible to step directly toward first base before the throw to first base, and such a move shall be called a balk. Of course, if the pitcher steps off the rubber and then makes such a move, it is not a balk.

But that's the change for this year. It's a balk if you fake to third and throw to first.
