Talking baseball

  • AL Beast?

I came across this article during my lunch break, and it got me thinking . . .

We all know about the superpowers known as the Yankees and Red Sox. We know the Rays are a sleeper, especially from the previous year. The Blue Jays are always tough and can never be counted out (although, granted, they've been declining as of late).

Now they're saying the Orioles might make some noise this year?

With that, I ask: from top to bottom, is the AL East the best division? Is it conceivable that all five teams in a single division could finish with a .500 record? Can anyone else beat these guys?

    What sayesth thou?

    Discuss.

  • Oh I don't know... I have not seen any big signings by the Orioles in the off season so I can't say they could be over .500. As many times as they will play the Yankees and RedSox whom are really the two power houses of the division they will have to be much improved to square up with them. The Rays are quite capable of being good, Blue Jays... I don't know...

That is the toughest division year in and year out with the two powerhouses there.... if either falter they will go out and get help at the trading deadline as we have seen it year in and year out.

  • Jays lost Halliday, likely to be below .500

I'm not sold on the Orioles. I hear this most years, but I doubt they'll compete with the other 3. The west seems tough, Angels, Texas making noise, Seattle improving. If OAK improved, they could all be .500

I think the NL West could be nicely down. Wouldn't be surprised to see all the teams below .500.

  • Gotta agree -- I'm not 100% sold on the Oreos . . . er, Orioles. Especially when they're relying so heavily on unproven talent. But it seems to be the trend for "have-not" teams to gamble on young (and cheap) talent.

Also, as long as Peter Angelos is in charge of that ballclub, there's always reason to doubt. The guy makes George Steinbrenner (in his prime) look sane.

Also agree that Toronto won't be as formidable now that Halliday is no longer in their rotation. But I think Cito Gaston should at least make them competitive, and now that Ricchairdi (sp?) is gone from their front office, maybe now they'll start making moves that actually makes sense for them.

  • Less than 2 weeks until pitchers and catchers report...a sure sign that spring is coming, at least to the US - woohoo!! 😎

  • Slackers, my old team starts practice Sun am. I'm thinking of going out to get started myself. Bought a new left hand first baseman's mitt yesterday 🙂

  • Ah yes....if I close my eyes I can feel the sunshine now.... I say that as it begins snowing here on the way to a 30 hour snowstorm that we can get 3-10 inches... crappy Ohio weather..... I think the East coast is going to have it worse than us though.

We're expecting a little snow here today - 1 to 3 inches. But we are currently near 40 degrees! Every little victory is a good victory!

  • LOL, actually I'm left handed though I played right handed as a kid until high school. I carry

    - left handed outfielder's mitt (all OF)

    - right handed infielder's mitt (1st and 2nd)

    - left handed first baseman's mitt (now for 1B)

I throw harder with the left hand, but also field better with it.

It snowed yesterday, < 1inch, but it's gone now. Sun should be fun.

Hey, I'm on the east coast, and I haven't seen a single flake*!

    (*Don't go there!!!)

The storm is supposed to hit to the south of where I am, so for once, we're going to luck out.

As it says in the forecast . . .

Upstate New York and most of New England will escape this storm completely.

    I'm in Albany, NY

That's still nothing compared to the 2 to 3 feet that the mid-Atlantic got! A very good friend of mine who lives in Maryland sent me pictures of her house. They remind me of the ice planet scenes in The Empire Strikes Back!

(Just to stick to the thread topic -- pitchers and catchers report a week from Wednesday!)
