Talking baseball

Great player, HOF worthy for his accomplishments over time (3K hits, games played, All stars, 5 gold gloves, WS MVP, Rookie of the year, etc. He's had clutch hits, including that great November HR.

All time, that's hard. I think biases come into play here. If you talk shortstops, he has to be in the top 5 somewhere. Honus, Ozzie, Ripkin I guess. Never a huge Ripkin fan, probably biased there. Some others, Banks for example, weren't just shortstops.

In terms of players, how do you even rank someone like Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth against a Denis Eckersly? It's silly, IMHO, and you have to go by position.

And he's managed to do this while consistently being one of the worst fielding shortstops in the league based on some of the more recent defensive statistics that are more objective than errors and fielding percentage.

  • Just back from our second winter practice. Feels great! If it wasn't for the first injury of the season by one of the first team players (badly hurt his left ankle again), and another first team player's car not starting after practice (immobilizer seems to be f-ed up).

Enjoy. We're down to 2 weeks, 3 games here. Had a good one today, 2-4, with 4 contacts on the ball. Played 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and made a play at each spot.

  • R.I.P. to a popular Boston player and a well-respected Yankees advisary . . .

  • Stinkin' Melky....depending on which report you read and what is speculated, the Giants may be the most "juiced" team in baseball.

This disappoints Yankee fans as well. Melky was very popular when he played in New York.

  • How about this recap...

-The Rocket it back (in the minors)

-Carl Crawford is out for Tommy John surgery (surprise!)

-Strasburg is reaching his innings limit (while the Nats have the best record in baseball and are a shoe in for the postseason [just like Boston this time last year, nyuk nyuk nyuk])

-Rick Sutcliffe wants Melky Cabrera's work visa revoked and deported

The Crawford thing. What a waste of money. This guy is hurt more than he's healthy and when he's healthy I have yet to see him play well enough to justify the cash thrown at him. Tommy John surgery this time around so he'll be out 7-9 months.

The Nationals, heading for the post season for the first time since the strike in 1981 while representing Canada. Their ace pitcher who is getting them there is almost being shut down. I understand you're protecting an investment but you also have an obligation as a team to do what it takes to win a championship. An obligation to ownership, to the community, the sponsors, teammates, and to your fans most of all. What they're doing is like pulling into the garage on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in order to save the car. "Would hate for anything bad to happen to it on the last lap, and we need it to race in California next weekend."

If they shut him down for the season and don't win the championship it will be the worst decision the team has ever made. If they shut him down and do win, then yay for everyone. Will be interesting to watch this all play out.

  • Nationals...Personally I'd go with the advice of the trainers and everyone in the front office. They know the pitcher well, what he has pitched in the past innings wise and what it does to extend a pitcher too long. There are MANY, MANY stories of great pitchers that pitched too much early on and never recovered.

It is going to be the Reds and the Yankees in the World Series anyway.... LOL.....

  • I look at the Nationals, and then I think back to the young superstars the Cubs had about a decade ago (Pryor/Wood). They didn't win, and the young pitchers were arguably overused and hurt.

Keep Strausborg going, but limit him. Go every 7 days, or limit his innings. You want him to keep working, but under less of a strain.

I thought everyone knew they use a different car in California than what they use at Daytona. 😛

But seriously though, it makes me wonder why they didn't start skipping some starts earlier in the season to avoid something like this. As a Cubs fan of course I remember Wood and Prior and the workload (especially for Wood) that ended up shortening what could have been wonderful careers. But I also remember something like this on a smaller scale with the Cubs in the 2007 playoffs. They pulled Zambrano in a 1-1 game after 6 well pitched innings and only 80 some pitches to save him for a start in game 4. Well they lost that game and of course game 4 never came. My point is, if the Nats don't win a World Series or 2 in the next 6-8 years, there are going to be people calling for the Nats GM's head.

Oh and how about Billy Hamilton?

  • After reading Moneyball, I think that unless you win a WS, you're in trouble no matter what. The playoffs are short, and they don't always favor the better team as it's a bit of a crapshoot. However your business has to run over time, so management, and Boris, want to watch what they do with the young kid.

  • That is a good point. I was just trying to say that this could be Washington's best shot at a WS in 10 years or longer. Why they weren't working on a plan to strech Strasburg out so he could make it to the playoffs and still be within his innings limit is beyond me. Sure it might have cost them a couple of wins over the season, but they'd still be alright as of today. But who knows, maybe they'll go on to win it all this year and go back to back next year and everyone will forget about this silly innings limit they have on him. I guess that's why they play the game and that's why we watch it. 🙂

off topic .... duh! This thought crossed my mind while typing but it's the only track that came to mind that is run in the first few races of the season. I didn't expect to run into NASCAR fans in the baseball thread!

on topic .... This kid has been throwing 95mph fast balls since high school. He'll be fine! Play the kid, win a WS and party like a rock star!

Grats to Mr. Hamilton. More interesting than 146+ stolen bases are the teams playing. The Pensacola Blue Wahoos and the Montgomery Biscuits.
