Talking baseball

Wow. So Kevin Youkilis changes the color of his Sox.

That surprises me. I thought he was going to be a fixture in Boston.

And just in case anyone missed this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBth4onC5ys

Don't worry, it's safe for work.

    Faker!

If this play doesn't get MLB to look into using replay, I don't know what will...

    Faker!

I don't think Wise, the outfielder, faked anything. The ump called the batter out while Wise was still in the stands.

    From http://mlb.mlb.com/cutfour/article.jsp?content_id=33986968

"I went out on the ball and saw the ball into his glove in his stands. He disappeared into the stands, and I believed that the ball was in his glove. In hindsight, I should have asked him to show me the ball, since he fell into the stands and out of my line of vision."

I don't think it's the player's job to correct the umpire. Plays like this are part of the game.

    Woo!

    err, I mean. Awww 🙁

My brother-in-law called me when it happened "we're screwed". Ha, no you're not. you'll be alright. CC will miss two starts so he's not a big loss. Pettite, well, a couple months is going to hurt. Not because he's amazing but because he's more amazing than what you might get from the minors.

Boston is tied (with TB) in third 6.5 games back from New York. I checked the games for yesterday and saw Boston had lost... but the whole AL East lost yesterday. That's funny.

  • So, I went to Yankee Stadium on Saturday -- and had an absolutely AMAZING day!!!

    • Hiroki Kuroda went 7 innings, gave up 3 hits, and no runs.
    • At once point, Kuroda retired 15 batters in a row.
    • Four Yankee pitchers combine for the shutout.
    • Three home runs hit in the game
    • Sat with the Bleacher Creatures for my first time, and got to participate in Roll Call!
    • Best moment: was in the picnic area for an alumni event before the game, and Reggie Jackson came to visit! (Seriously!!!) Got my pic taken with him!!!

On the last bullet point: if I can figure out how to post pics here, I will do so! (Or maybe Steve Jones can do it for me -- he can see my Facebook account!)

  • How did your wife handle sitting in that section? Did she represent Boston?

  • Visible proof

  • Slightly jealous of Ray. He lives close enough to Yankee Stadium to get to a game for the day, and he meets Mr. October. I still remember the 3 HRs in 3 bats as a kid.

  • awesomeness!

I'm not one to normally get star struck, but that is very cool to have met a legend.

  • That very much made my day!!! As my wife told people, "Ray very much had his 'squee!!!' moment!"

As it turned out, the fans weren't as rowdy as I'd expected! (Not sure if I'm relieved or disappointed! :hehe:) There was a bachelorette party several rows in front of me that got some attention! (Some of the various chants: "Get a pre-nup!" "Take his mon-ey!")

I will say that it was very cool to participate in Roll Call!

And other than wearing a red top, my wife played the role of a cat at a dog show! 😉

  • Mentions of Roll-call at Yankee Stadium make me think of all the creative ways fans show their love. If you're not watching the NL West much, you may have missed the group of guys in San Francisco who've adopted Melkie Cabrera. They attend games in all-white dairymen unis, complete with caps emblazoned "Melk Man" and bow-ties (orange, of course). I think it took a month or so for them to convince their wives/gf's/dates to join the gang and dress up too, as "Melk Maids".

I love the game for what it is, but also think that this sort of fandom adds a lot to the fun. What examples of creative fandom might there be in other ballparks?
