Yes, I have said that for years. You DO have to have the talent. I could not hit 400 or 500 HRs. I also don't blame the players as much because the MLB big wigs, owners and the players Union did NOT ban those substances when they knew it was rampant in the sport. Shame on them! If it wasn't against the rules to have them for the sport it was just a question of morals I guess.

So, McGuire, HOF?
Listened to Buster Olney this morning, interesting take. He says writers should not vote. They are there to follow the news, not be a part of it. I agree. They should have an opinion, but they are inserting themselves into the debate here instead of just having an opinion on it.

And on a sad note, my team manager came back and said he can only play part time and that we're down to 5 players and a couple part timers 🙁
Need to search out some players in Denver or find another team.

I also agree that it has more to do with his new job than any other factor. As far as steroids (and this might be debated) I've always felt you still have to see and hit the ball and that's not something steroids improve. That being said you do have to wonder if they contribute to how far the ball goes once they connect.
With so many people using - I don't think it should be a factor. Pitchers used and hitters used. You do need to have the talent in the first place - steroids enhance your ability as well as reaction time. They enable quicker recovery from injury and then of course are the many downsides.
At least he wasn't corking his bat (that we know of).

I think writers will be more lenient now.
I still think he is HOF caliber.

Jan,Glad you're enjoying it. Are you wood or metal bat down there?
The juniors play metal, lower leagues either wood or metal and majors/masters have to play wood.

I actually meant to reply to this sooner. Glad to hear my favorite sport is alive and well in South Africa!Does South Africa have a national team? Would they look to compete in the WBC (World Baseball Classic)?
Hi Ray,
Yes, we do have a National Team. Went over to Spain for some large tournament and did relatively well. As to WBC? I really would not know.

Basically, the WBC is baseball's equivalent of soccer's World Cup (sorry -- football -- that's the ignorant American in me ;-)). There has only been two WBC tournaments so far (Japan has won both of them), so it's still young and growing, but it seems to be gaining some steam, especially now that it's been dropped from the Olympics (NOT happy about that).

Sad to see it leave the Olympics, but it's also not great that the US doesn't send it's best players. Nor do other countries that have MLB players.
I saw a note recently that they were talking about the World Series champ playing the Japanese, and possibly Korean champs after the series. That would be interesting.

Unfortunately (IMHO), I think the blame for this goes to MLB owners. They won't let any of their players, especially their stars, take a couple of weeks during the regular season to participate. In my mind, that's no different from the 15 day DL, and it's only once every four years. AFAIK, other major-league team sports that are represented in the Olympics (basketball and hockey come to mind) allow their players to do this. Why won't MLB owners follow suit?

Yes it would, although I'm Korean in ancestry. I'd be torn in a US vs. Korea World Series! (Although if the US representative was my Yankees, there'd be no question! ;-))

Hehe, we also call football soccer in this country, as do the Ozzies.
Re WBC, what I meant with "I really wouldn't know" was that I'm not an official of the SA Baseball Union, so I have no idea whether SABU ever considered it. Are you involved in organizing the WBC somehow?
RE baseball being dropped from the Olympics, I actually didn't know it ever was an Olympic discipline. Then again, with the amount of sports my dearest wife allows me to watch on sports channels, I should be forgiven for my ignorance ;-).

Heh -- I wish! That's like asking me if I worked on President Obama's staff! 😉
A number of American Major League players are involved in the WBC. Derek Jeter played for Team USA, Ichiro Suzuki played for Japan, Shin Soo Choo for Korea, Jorge Posada for Puerto Rico, etc. Also, countries that don't have as extensive a baseball history allow sons and grandsons of countrymen to play for them, which allowed people like Mike Piazza to play for Italy, for example.

Yeah, baseball was an Olympic sport starting in (I think it was) 1988, and this past Bejing Olympics was the last one in which baseball was played. The IOC dropped baseball (and softball) from the 2012 London Olympics. 🙁
My wife, thankfully, lets me watch my sports, although it gets interesting when my New York Yankees and her Boston Red Sox play each other! (Red Sox vs. Yankees, Arsenal vs. Manchester United, hammer vs. nail, oil vs. water, etc. etc. etc.!)

Should be three week until we start practice.
Looking forward to the season. Thinking to drive to KC this year for a game.

To go see the Royals, I assume? (Some people might say, "why?")
How long does it take to drive from Denver to KC?
