Yea... but you are not a multi-millionaire already though. I'd walk away with a smile on my face and live the luxury life the rest of my days on the planet. You never know when your last day will be. He should be set for life many times over. If you've earned it you should enjoy it!

no?
...
I'm not 🙁
I'd like to think that if I was set for life, I'd still occupy my time doing something I love. Guess that's why it's so hard for some guys to walk away. A love for the game makes saying enough is enough, all that much harder. Good for him though. Taking a minor league contract for a relatively tiny (yankee standard) salary just to get the chance to pitch again? That says a lot about why he would like to play again.

Well... I see your point. If it is something you love to do and you have a very competitive nature about you like he seems to. I guess my point was that if you are away from loved ones on the road 8 months of the year by the time your body retires you or the game no longer wants you you might not be able to enjoy life. I am coming to this from a point of being in a very serious car accident one day in my 20s and doctor telling me I had cancer at age 42 and 2 months later being operated on. You just never know.

Love to say I'd do something I love, never know. Hard to knock Pettite, but until you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, how do you know?
I say good for him. I look forward to playing baseball every year, even though it does take time from family.

Sure, there's a point to be made about going out with dignity, knowing when to quit and all that, but the competitive spirit that makes an athlete commit his life to a sport is not easily quenched. I just love that a guy headed for the Hall wants to keep strapping on the gear. AP and Rickey Henderson are the kind of players that make this game so great. They built a track record of superior performance and then cannot believe they wouldn't still be able to play with the "kids" out there now. Here in San Francisco, we're seeing the same story in football with the Niners signing thirty-five year-old Randy Moss after a year of "retirement", and now they're in the hunt for Peyton Manning. Guys like that (see Brett Favre) CANNOT see themselves as unworthy of the uniform.

Going a little off topic, looks like Manning chose Denver! (WooHoo goes the Broncos fan here!)

Moss at one point in time could have been considered in the same league as a Pettitte, Farve, Shilling, or Henderson but not anymore. In his last year he displayed the same selfish attitude on three different teams. He's in it for himself and nothing else. He might be a great player but in my opinion, he doesn't show the same love for the sport. That's why he isn't in the same league as some other notable athletes. Perhaps his attitude will change in San Francisco... good luck 😀

2 weeks left! oh mang! getting pumped!
About a month ago, I signed up for this MLB Insiders Club. I had just bought a cap from MLB.com and thought it was their little members only thing. Long story short, it's not. I signed up and got my welcome package and the material just looked sketchy. I read some reviews online about the service and they all said the same thing. The gimmick is they'll send you stuff for "free". If you don't want it, you have to send it back or they'll charge you.
I haven't sent them any money and don't plan on it either. Have you guys seen this gig yet?

Yeah, I admit that I signed up for the gimmick. I generally have no qualms about most of the stuff they send (but that's just me). I've sent back the trinkets like coins, etc., but I generally hold on to books, that sort of thing.

Came across this article about the increasing international interest in MLB (especially in Japan).
So, is a short-term inconvenience good for the long-term health of the game?

I have never liked it personally. To a degree I understand the importance of an International market.. but... I just don't get what playing two games to begin the season does for the game. I cannot imagine that anyone in the US will get up at 6AM to watch the games. Regardless of MLB playing two games there a year or not Japanese players will STILL want to come to the US and play here. It is the big stage.
I know... I know.... International exposure means more $$ for MLB right?

In case anyone (like me) missed it, the season officially opened this morning! Woo-hoo!!! :w00t:

Also, in case anyone missed it, Magic Johnson's group is to purchase the Dodgers, and Jose Canseco[/url] would like to play for them. :hehe:

I had no idea the season has begun... well... maybe because it happened while we were asleep and not in North America. I just don't like it... I know... I know... it is about International exposure and $$$.

yay for baseball! Again, I've been soaking up all the spring training games I can!
Opening day in Japan... I get it, as Markus said, international play = $$ for MLB. So long as the teams approve it and they are given plenty of time to recover from the jet lag, sure. They played their two game series in Japan and are probably already back home and resting. They'll have a few days before playing again.
Good for Magic Johnson! Good name, good reputation. I hope he does well with his two billion dollar baseball team.
Canseco ... no.
Woo! On a pumped up and positive note, I got tickets to the red sox/nationals exhibition game on Tuesday! /dance

2 billion, yikes. One of the co-owners of the GS Warriors is in the ownership group for the Dodgers now.....WTF?!?!??
Lincecum and Kershaw horsin' around doin' photo ops...
$25 cheap tix to games...
I'm a grumpy old man who wants double headers, no DH and affordable tix. This isn't just an MLB prob, it's all pro sports. Wish we'd all stop attending and buying paraphernalia for a while...we just feed the beast.
/rant off
So...baseball has begun, woot!
