Talking baseball

Gary Carter has lost his battle with cancer.

    Rest in peace, Gary.

Amen to that. Carter gave me some wonderful memories. First in my mind is his 1984 all-star game, which I was fortunate enough to attend in San Francisco. He won his second All-star MVP that night, driving in the GWRBI (a rightfully discontinued official stat). If it weren't for the Giants being my home-town team, he, "Rock" Raines and Andre Dawson would have made me an Expos fan.

I'm actually close enough to Montreal to have caught a few Expos games. For a while, I even listed the Expos as my favorite NL team (as a Yankee fan, there was no way I was going to root for the Mets).

Having said that, however, I did root for Gary Carter and the rest of the Mets in the mid-to-late 80s. Alas, I never had the opportunity to see him play in person.

  • I remember him going 5 for 5 as a Giant one night, at the 'Stick.

More that I've heard about him this morning, the more I respect the man.

.....as a Yankee fan, there was no way I was going to root for the Mets .....

Absolutely!!! The first game (of maybe four lifetime) I saw at Yankee Stadium was in June 1985. Ed Whitson had a rocky start, giving up a run or two early, but then settled down, going three up/three down for the rest of his stint. The Yanks' bullpen lost it in extra innings. All very exciting, but the thing I remember most clearly from that night (besides the great seats a few rows behind the Yankee dugout) was the sarcastic "Let's go Mets!" chants every time the out of town scoreboard showed more runs scored down in Philly, where the hated denizens of Shea were getting pounded 26-7.

  • Oh man! Here we go!

Spring training is HERE! Bryce Harper thinks he's an all-star for the Nats, Wake retires, Veritek still not signed, Ortiz is on a year for 12 mil, and Manny Ramirez signed a minor league contract with Oakland.

I got my hat rotation in the works (different hat for each day of the week!) and ready for the regular season!

  • Gotta luv the excitement of a new year.

I'm interested to see if the Giant's roster is going to work. Hopefully Bochi continues his wizardry (or continues being lucky).

  • I listened to the first two Red's Spring Training games over the weekend.... nice to hear baseball on the radio again.

  • Someone said last week that every Saturday until Oct will now have baseball.

First scrimmage yesterday. Good to be back on the field. Misjudged a deep fly in the wind, got a couple good grounders at third. Wayyyyy ahead at the plate with easy grounders to the first baseman

  • And down here in South Africa the season is kind-of over. Two more friendlies to come plus the Juniors are only wrapping up in three weeks time. Gonna miss it, sigh. But... next season is coming soon, just six months away 😎

  • I already have us some tickets to Red's home games from the first day they put them on sale. Can't wait for warm weather to return to Ohio! Go Red's! Todays Spring Training game is on TV and I am DVRing it to watch tonight.

  • I didn't get a chance to listen to any games this weekend (SQL Saturday in Mountain View was a blast) but am excited for baseball on the radio again.

Here's to hoping the Giants are relevant this year!
