Didn't see the game, but sounds like lots of drama in there.I had the game on in the background. There were too many missed chances. Too many at-bats where the Yanks had ducks on the pond, and they couldn't cash them in.
The Yankees need to learn how to play small-ball. They can't rely on the big hit all the time; it won't always be there. A great team knows how to win even when they're playing poorly.
That was the problem with my team most of the year. Lots of people left on 2nd/3rd without timely hits. Finally put it together at the end of the year for a few wins in a row.

We are getting closer to a Cardinals/Tigers rematch of 1968 and 2006!.... Could it happen for a third time? Still a long way to go but ya never know.
I'd love to see that. LaRussa ain't perfect, but there's good reason he's the third winningest manager ever, behind only Mack & McGraw. I got to see him manage the A's in Oakland (is it twenty years ago already?), and St Louis has great fans, folks who love and appreciate the game, so the Cards are easy for me to get behind if the Giants aren't in it. Tonight's game will be fun on so many levels -- wild-card team could knock off the team with the best regular season record, Carpenter and Halladay are brothers from another mother since being teammates in Canada, Philies fans with their (sometimes) nasty reputation and the (mostly) down-home Cards fans.

I agree, it should be interesting. Carpenter has had an up and down season and the pressure is on him and the Cardinals to win the game in Philly. Although there has to be pressure on the Phillies to win as they have the highest payroll in the NL and got knocked off last season. Some of their key older players are going to start to be in decline in the coming couple of years so this groups time is now to win it all. I believe they were THE team picked to win the NL so they have the pressure of the results.

Let's hope they do not feel the pressure. If it is anything like game one, hopefully the phils out hit the cards.
PS. A couple of bad fans do not spoil the bunch. From what I hear from other stadiums, there is just as bad stuff going on there. Killing fans of other teams, etc. I don't think Phillies fans have stooped that low yet!

Lord, no, I hope not! Please forgive my broad brush -- I was thinking more of the comparative reputation of Philadelphia sports fans in general than an absolute indictment of Phillies fans. In fact, there's one fan for whom I'd like to see a Phillies victory, and that's Ryan White, the youngster hit by some drunken fool after a game in San Francisco. The big picture is never so simple as "Cards good, Phillies bad". I think we all agree on that, right?

My Brewers tanked in Arizona. They really have road issues. Today's game starts in about 18 minutes. I'm nervous as a new father.

You and me both after the Phillies blew it in St Louis.

2 favorites (Rangers, Brewers) advance, 2 underdogs (Cards, Tigers)
Gonna be good championship series coming up.
I say it's a Tigers/Brewers WS.
October 8, 2011 at 4:05 pm
I'm with you on the Brewers. I still like the Rangers to go all the way (though I'm certainly biased) - they've been riding a huge wave since early September, and so far everybody is healthy and ready to go.
I was very surprised that the Phils went down. Frankly, I didn't think that series would go past 4 games at most. The Cards SP from last night had a stellar nights, a complete game shutout with 3 hits IIRC.

I think all of Philly was stunned. Give up 1 earned run & lose 1-0

Was listening on and off. Carpenter is steller.
The problem, which I agree with Billy Bean on, is that in a short series, either 5 or 7 games, it's a toss up. Luck can come into play and with strong pitching from 1 or 2 people, you can dominate.
Rangers look good, and are a better team, IMHO, but Verlander is a wild card. If you face him 3 times, that could be a problem.
October 8, 2011 at 4:15 pm
No doubt, Verlander is the linchpin. I've said all along that I'd rather face the Yankees and all that brings with it rather than seeing Verlander. They'd almost certainly pitch him 3x in a full series, and as much as I like CJ Wilson and the other starters, we don't have a Verlander.
Of course, if last year's playoff Colby Lewis shows up (as opposed to the often good but occasionally shaky Colby Lewis from this regular season), he could be our standout SP.

oh man! been gone for a while on not-really vacations.
Yankees are out of it (yay). Rays are out of it (yay). Now you Boston haters can join me in the corner!
Check this out, 1 run down with a man on and 2 out in the bottom of the ninth who would you want up at bat? Alex Rodriguez right? Yes please! Just goes to show that a 100 million dollar bag of cash can't get a base hit. (that's my only dig, i'm done :D)
So who do we have left?
St. Louis and Milwaukee (1-1)
Texas and Detroit (2-0)
I think I'm going to stick with my underdog attitude. I called Detroit and Milwaukee in the championship and I'm sticking with it! It's looking like the Cards and Brewers are a pretty good match-up so that will be fun to watch. The Rangers and Tigers... man, the Rangers are playing well right now so they will be tough to come back on. The downside for the Tigers is that you can't have Verlander pitch every game. If he's your silver bullet, you've gotta shoot him 4 times! (not literally of course. don't send the FBI). It's going to be tough, but they have the ability to overcome a 2 game deficit.
Francona is gone (not sure how i feel about that), here's hoping for dropping half our pitching staff! Only then can we really start rebuilding.

Message from the other side of the world again. Our season has taken off with two rounds for the seniors and one for the juniors.
Our first team ended up having a bye, so it was up to us, the second team to open the season on our fields. We kept our opposition (Kenfac) down and were still up at the start of frame 5, but then succumbed, allowing them 12 runs, ouch.
This week we went to Bothasig, our neighbours, with spirits high, and 14 players. Now darn, what do you do with 5 on the bench as a coach of a social side? Anyone feel with me? Get them all a turn to play is what I did. Anyhow, we were well on our way to win the game, being 10:5 up in the third, but then getting totally clubbered and eventually losing 10:15. Yeah, well. We had fun, and that's what a social side is about, isn't it?
Juniors (U16) yesterday was a bit dissapointing since the opposition pitched up (on their home fields) with just 7 players and that 40 minutes late, so we took the points and played a 1 frame friendly which went 3-1 to us. At least the kids got to play.
Greets from Africa!

Sorry for your loss, seemed like you had it in the bag there for a while then it just fell apart. Let me ask you this, as a coach of a team in a social league, do you find it more important to win or to let everyone play?
Looks like the World Series is set up for Wednesday! Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals!
Bleh, not sure how excited I am about this. The only player I know on either team is Albert Pujols. Not too confident I'll be watching. Might try a few innngs, but I'm not super excited.
