Alomar: Yes, he apologized and the two are good friends now from what I heard. Although the last 1/3 of his career his numbers tailed off quite a bit. After he left Cleveland and was in NY his numbers were terrible.

Alomar - spitting is keeping him outActually, I understand that Alomar has since apologized, and the umpire who was the intended target has not only forgiven him, he has endorsed him for Cooperstown.
That may be so. I don't know that has sunk into the minds of the voters though. Since the vote I have heard a dozen different Sports Talk radio hosts bring up the spitting incident and how it tarnished him. Then again, it provides more reason to have the reasoning for the vote divulged.
It just dawned on me though why they won't. Since the vote, what has been one of the top sports stories - The Vote and who got in and who didn't.

I just came across this article which seems to fall in line with this thread.

R. Alomar rubbed me the wrong way for the spitting incident but over time I let it not cloud his numbers in my mind. Bet he will get in next year.

Just to get this discussion started . . .
Ray K (1/7/2010)
- What players, active or retired, who are NOT yet eligible for the Hall deserve enshrinement?
Off the top of my head: Derek Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki, Albert Pujols, Mariano Rivera, Randy Johnson, Trevor Hoffman, Ken Griffey Jr., Greg Maddux, John Smoltz
- What active players who've been active for less than five years do you think are potential HOF'ers?
On this, I'll need to think some more -- maybe when I'm not at work! 😉
- What non-players (executives, umpires, movers/shakers, etc.) should be in the Hall?
As much as it pains me to say this, George Steinbrenner
I can probably come up with more, but that will require some thought. (Ever stop to think and forget to start again? :-))

From OldHand:

I think this is going to be very interesting and no one will be able to predict who. The reason I say this is because of the steroid era and overly inflated numbers due to pitching being watered down, almost all new ballparks are smaller too. Some of these huge numbers are somewhat inflated as far as alot are concerned AND especially the old timers that vote that are already in the HOF.
Manny Ramirez - Has a very high batting average and lots of HR. As a person not easy to deal with and not well liked by many and some consider him not a good hustler.
AROD: Steroid issues, being in NY will be against him for some voters and face it his high salary too.
Albert Pujols: Unless something bad happens to him he is a SHOE in for the HOF. It is my opinion he is the best all around player of current time.

This post may be a little late but had to agree about being a fan. Living in SoCal I grew up a Dodgers fan. Although they've made me sick ever since the O'Malleys sold the team. Fox was the worst thing that ever happened to them, can you say the Piazza deal?
But I digress. I'm a hugh Nebraska Cornhusker fan! Have I ever lived there? Nope. But I also grew up watching them on TV every Thanksgiving weekend vs. Oklahoma because my dad grew up in Nebraska. So yeah, being a fan isn't necessarily about where you live.

Nebraska gets that great College World Series. Need to pop over some year and see it.

Great to see a Baseball Thread popping up on SSC!
I'm a big fan of the game, even if I happen to live in South Africa. Got a nice league going here in Cape Town with 20-odd clubs, with teams all the way from U-8s to Majors/Masters. I myself only took up playing two years ago at the age of 46 after watching my own kids play U-12s and U-14s. All my wife's fault (she grew up in the States).
The game is really fun, even if you get struck out time and again. If you hit the ball really well and it goes for a two-bagger or even a Home Run (which I have never managed so far), now that's when you get one of the biggest smiles on your face in your life. On the other hand, if you've made third trying to steal it and the batter hits a really stupid ball and you go out, that's the worst kind of tears you can get on your face.
What's really challenging down here though is to get the kids committed to be at practice on time every time, and then be on time for games as well. No, what's really more difficult is to get people to help out to manage the fields. Spent most of last week together with another few committee members moving the backstop on the main diamond, digging out/cutting grass and flattening the area, drawing lines, even removing rugby posts from the field. A big schlepp, including sunburns at this time of the year (yeah, it is summer down here). But after all, it's worth it in the long run.

Jan,
Glad you're enjoying it. Are you wood or metal bat down there?
I really enjoy it as well, and am looking forward to practice starting in about 30 days here for the new season. I've been lucky enough to hit a home run or two a year, and it is great. Last year I started the season 0-3 in the first game before hitting one out. My second game started out with a triple, a single, and a double before a fly out.
Two games, 4 at bats in a row had me an "extended cycle", which was pretty cool.

Breaking News...
Is it a move to boost popularity and get the writers on his side, or is it just to come clean?

The timing is interesting. I think it has more to do with him now being a coach for the Cardinals. He was going to be hounded by reporters every town he went to and this ends the questions of did he or did he not.

Agreed. I don't think there was any way he could fill his hitting coach role unless he came clean.
I've always gotten the impression that McGwire was a class act (steroids notwithstanding), and I suspect that this was a burden he wanted to get off his shoulders.

I actually meant to reply to this sooner. Glad to hear my favorite sport is alive and well in South Africa!
Does South Africa have a national team? Would they look to compete in the WBC (World Baseball Classic)?

I also agree that it has more to do with his new job than any other factor.
As far as steroids (and this might be debated) I've always felt you still have to see and hit the ball and that's not something steroids improve. That being said you do have to wonder if they contribute to how far the ball goes once they connect.
