Talking baseball

  • tknight (12/24/2009)

The Yankees are like Microsoft. A right-thinking person does not root for them, he accepts them.

Hey, as I tell my wife (who is a devoted Mac person): "I have nothing against Apple, but Microsoft pays our mortgage."

And can I help it that I became a Yankee fan when I was 12? 🙂

  • Agree there. Being a fan has nothing to do with thinking. The whole idea of rooting for someone else in a sporting event is kind of silly.

I started T-ball as a kid. When I was about 8 or 9, I discovered Monday Night Baseball on our little 9" black and white TV. I stayed up late watching the Yankees v Red Sox, with Catfish Hunter, Bucky Dent, and just decided to become a Yankee fan. I've been one since, through thick and thin, and rooted against the Red Sox. No logic there, just the first game I saw, late at night, as a kid.

Same thing for football. First NFL game I saw was Cowboys v Steelers. My brother "picked" the Bradshaw/Swan/Harris Steelers to root for against my Staubach/Pearson/Dorsett Cowboys. We were talking yesterday about the Steelers win and I was rooting for the Cowboys.

  • Only . . .

Just got my email about the new season this morning for the old man's league. We report in 4.5 weeks!

Nice! I wish I could play ball. Trouble is, I throw like a girl (sorry, ladies!).

Waaaaay back when I was playing softball regularly, I was pretty good with swinging the bat and putting the ball in play. Whenever someone asked me my best position, I'd always tell them, "DH!"

  • It's a lot of fun, and people throw all sorts of ways. A wide variety of talent, but I enjoy just going out there with a ball. In many ways I enjoy practice more than the games.

  • I see the Mess . . . uhh, Mets got Jason Bay . . .

  • Lankford

    Mattingly

    Dale Murphy

McGwire (don't care about the alleged steroid use - too many baseball players use them for that to be a fair argument)

    Dawson

    Maybe Larkin

  • I'm going with:

    Alomar

    Blyleven

    Dawson

    Larkin

Martinez (I don't care if he was a full-time DH, he was still a great hitter)

    Morris

    Raines

    Maybe Lee Smith.

I hear you about McGwire, but I'm not sold on him just yet.

Mattingly was my favorite player when I was in high school, but I'm not sure that he's Hall-worthy (although I'd love to see him in).

  • I just found this thread. I am a HUGE MLB fan. I don't like any other sport other than baseball for some reason. I am 44 and live in Columbus OH and in the 1970's the Reds were one of the best teams around and I started watching them and following them on the radio. My parents are from the Cleveland area but the Indians were mostly a joke then. I remember taking my son (5) to his first ballgame in 2000 when Griffey came to Cincinnati. His first at bat I told my son watch him because at any time he could hit a long home run.... He did! What a memory for all of us, one other game a few years ago he hit home runs in back to back at bats.... granted his career in Cincinnati was not that hot but memories of 'when you were there' are pretty cool. A couple years ago I got to see a walk off 3 run HR to win a game too... pretty cool stuff.

I follow almost every team and am a big stats guy too, not just the Reds but all teams.

I would like to see Larkin get into the HOF but I think his numbers are borderline due to a handful of injury laden years.

  • Welcome to the thread, Markus!

I was the same way -- until I went to college, baseball was the only sport that existed for me. Even now, it's the only professional sport I follow avidly. (I follow other sports as well, but almost all of them are strictly college, not pro.)

My ex-girlfriend lives in Columbus. Does that count?

Sure that counts.... I try to watch football and basketball but I just cannot get into either of them. I don't know why. Something about summer, baseball, sitting on the patio at night listening to a baseball game on the radio, watching part of a game on TV, being LIVE at a game. I know I am one of the very few that only follow baseball anymore. Football is king in the US.
