  • Jeter signs (http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5884052), though I think they overpaid a bit.

Still, glad he's still a Yankee.

  • I had a friend ask me what I thought Jeter should do. I said three years, plus an option -- which is exactly what happened.

I thought Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sux -- uhhh, Sox -- was interesting. He averaged 32 HR and 100+ RBI in a pitcher's park like Petco. Imagine what he'll do in a little bandbox like Fenway.

Oh, and good job by your Rockies for locking up Tulo to a long term contract!

  • Cliff Lee Sweepstakes.....

•The Yankees have just gone to a seventh year for Lee, tweets SI's Jon Heyman. With Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth getting deals of that length, it'd be hard to sign Lee without matching. The Yanks' previous offer was reported to be six years and $140MM, so in theory this one could nudge Lee past C.C. Sabathia for the largest contract even given to a pitcher.

Will the Rangers ante up more?

  • If they're smart they'll let him go. They made a good effort and fans won't riot over a guy who wasn't there very long. It's way too much money for a guy that old with that injury history who really might not be all that. Let the Yankees have him forever at that astronomical price. The Rangers can turn to Pavano or Greinke on much shorter contracts and be just about as happy in the long run.

I think a 6 year or greater for ANY player is just nuts. I would agree with you completely. The last thing Texas needs is a big contract tying their hands like the A-Rod deal they had.

As a Rangers fan, I hope so. We've got a new ownership group that seems to genuinely care about winning, so perhaps we can get it done.

I doubt that we'd need to top the offer by a lot. $140M in New York is more like $200M in Dallas, when taking into account taxes and other costs of living.

The other elephant in the room is the rumor that Michael Young will be traded. Give up Young for Lee? Tough to answer, but my gut says yes. Superstar third basemen are easier to find than superstar pitchers.

  • Tim...

The problem with this bidding war is that the Yankee's can easily afford this. I don't think the Rangers can. If the Rangers sign him will they be able to then sign Josh Hamilton to a long term deal too?

I probably don't have to remind you that the A-Rod deal in Texas is what got them into trouble... one big long term deal is like putting all of your eggs in one basket. If Hamilton cannot be signed and is traded or left to walk and Lee goes on the DL for an extended length of time how many losses will pile up?

You don't need an A-Rod in Texas or a Griffey in Cincinnati. Being a Reds fan I know what it is like to have an injured player that ties your payroll.

  • Definitely agree that we don't want another A-Rod situation. Or even a Kevin Millwood, or Chan Ho Park.

I just read on the Dallas Morning News that the Yanks have upped their offer to 7 years. IF that's the case, the Rangers should have zero chance of keeping Lee. Six years at $20M+ per is a huge stretch, but 7 years should be a dealbreaker.

  • Whoa -- Cliff Lee offered a seventh year?!?!?

This could come back to haunt them (I'm sure all the Yankee haters out there hope so!). I was reading this article yesterday about how such a long contract could work against a team (and I agree with it). Best case scenario: the Yankees end up with Mike Mussina who, after a few years, didn't have his best stuff anymore, but was able to make adjustments so that he was still effective. Worst case: they end up with another Carl Pavano.

I think the Yankees upped the ante because of Boston's deal with Carl Crawford. The arms race in the AL East has just escalated.

  • The latest on Cliff Lee:

    # The Yankees have presented Lee with an assortment of contract choices, writes Sherman. He believes the bids are something like five years for $125MM ($25MM per), six years for $144MM ($24MM per), and seven years for $161MM ($23MM per). I have a feeling this will reach its resolution with Lee signing the largest pitching contract ever.

    # The Rangers requested the Arkansas meeting and plan to increase their offer beyond five years, tweets Rosenthal. The Rangers are "adding any perk necessary" to please Lee and his family, tweets Yahoo's Steve Henson.

    # Crasnick reports that the Yankees' new seven-year offer has a lower average annual value than the $23.3MM of their previous one. So this offer could be worth less than Sabathia's contract.

    # The Rangers are sending a contingent to meet with Lee and agent Darek Braunecker in the pitcher's hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. This will mark the team's third trip to Arkansas. The Rangers are sending owner Chuck Greenberg and assistant GM Thad Levine, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

    # Angels GM Tony Reagins acknowledged interest in Lee, tweets Rosenthal.

  • Wow . . .

I think Philadelphia just won themselves the next three or four World Series.

Three things we learned from Cliff Lee's new deal with Philadelphia
