Talking baseball

  • Oh I agree. They are players that have come through their system as I saw them and others when their AAA was here in Columbus OH until a few years ago. I realize George is gone but of any franchise that has big $$ to spend they are it and I am sure if they don't have a great player to replace SS or closer they will go out and get whomever they need to get the job done. With Boston and now the Rays being contenders now their is a little more pressure to win to get into the playoffs. I cannot imagine Yankee fans in NY were very happy that the small market low budget Rays won the division this year.

Believe me, speaking as a Yankee fan, we'd rather see the Rays than the Red Sux -- uhh, Sox -- in the postseason! πŸ˜€

Funny... yea.. I can fully understand that.....

  • So, Texas beats Tampa Bay in ALDS Game 5 last night. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's the first time ever that the visiting road team won every game in a five-game series.

    So . . .

ALCS: New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers

NLCS: San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies

My analysis: Texas has had the Yankees' number this year, but the Yanks might have caught a break, because Cliff Lee pitched Game 5 last night, making it unlikely that he'll pitch Game 1 of the ALCS. At the same time, Texas is a fast, small-ball team -- the type that has given the Yankees fits (see LA Angels, 2005). Nevertheless, New York is playing good baseball when they're at their best: in October. I think the resilient and more experienced Yanks find a way. Yankees in 6.

The Giants have shown they are capable of winning. Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, et al, are building a solid foundation, and they're going to be a tough team for years to come. However, I'm thinking that the Phillies H2O pitching staff and their power bats are going to be too much for the Team By The Bay. Phillies in 5.

A great weekend in the NL West with the Padres making it interesting.

    I say:

    NYY over MIN

    TEX over TB

    CIN over PHI

    SF over ATL

    I say:

    NYY over MIN

    TEX over TB

    PHI over CIN

    SF over ATL

    -------------

    TEX over NYY

    PHI over SF

    -------------

    TEX over PHI

Good thing I'm not a betting man though.

Maybe I should've bet. So far, so good. Sorry Ray, methinks the Yanks are going DOWN!!

First time road team has won all games, and sad to see it go down with some sloppy play. That throw to third looked like something out of my league. Yikes.

Cliff Lee should pitch game 2, which means Yanks still should face him twice. He could go on 4 days for Game 1, but not sure that's the best idea, especially given how well Texas has played NYY this year.

Giants have a chance because of pitching. They need to hit the H2O trio though.

At least we made it this far! I don't see the White Sox or Cubs around! πŸ˜›

The Sox won it all a few years ago and the Cubs sniff around every few years but as far as recurring VALID playoff threats, ahhh, no. The Sox got lucky at the right time and if it wasn't for bad luck the Cubs wouldn't have any luck at all. That's what makes Spring so special here, we can't wait to get the season going - this is OUR year. We're usually brought back to reality with a resounding thud as Summer begins and we start looking to "next year" - that's going to be OUR year.

I figure that if the Red Sox can be annual playoff contenders after 86 years of futility, then anything is possible. If the Cubs could get some horses who are capable of being consistent without getting hurt (an astute GM can help with that effort), and they get a manager who's capable of creating the right chemistry, it's possible. As much as I love Lou Piniella (I loved him when he played for the Yanks), I'm not sure that he was the right man for the job.

I don't know what the Cubs problem is really. They spend a TON of money and it just seems like the player mix is off. The Zambrano long term deal was a waste though. They have alot of freed up payroll to be big time if they spend it in the right places.

Let see, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood (who is doing quite well now), Corey Patterson, the 5 tool savior. They seem to pick well but for some reason (the curse of the goat?), but it just never totally pans out for them. We do have some promising kids, and with a few quality veterans to help continue their growth, we should be fine inthe not too-distant future. Don't get me started about the GM, therein lies the crux of the problem. Fukudome and millions of dollars, Soriano and more millions, Zambrano, even more. Shoot, I could probably play as well as some of these guys and I'd be willing to settle for 1/2 the pay. :w00t:

  • Freddy’s Pan Will Bang No More for Yankees

There are fans . . . and then there are FANS. Freddy was a fixture at Yankee games (yes, I saw him myself whenever I went down to the Stadium) -- to the point where he was considered an integral part of the Yankee Stadium landscape. The big ballpark in the Bronx won't be the same without him.

    Rest in peace, Freddy.

Bad news (for us Yankee fans): Cliff Lee was on another planet.

    Yeah, well...The Dude abides.
  • I'm starting to resign myself to the fact that this isn't the Yankees' year.

Aside from that one mistake to Bengie Molina, A.J. Burnett did exactly what he had to do last night. I blame last night on the volatile bullpen and the absent Yankee bats, not Burnett.

The Yanks look demoralized. The usual killer instinct and swagger they usually have just isn't there. (The Rangers have it right now.) Last night, they looked tentative; the confidence just wasn't there.

To win the ALCS, they have to beat Cliff Lee in Game 7. I don't see that happening.
