Yeah, I probably should've voted 80s. I voted 70s because Mike Schmidt was in his prime then. This weekend was interesting as well -- Jacoby Ellsbury stole home (again! -- although granted it was part of a double-steal, not a straight steal like last time), and the Blue Jays took a no-hitter into the eighth inning!
I'm with your first instinct. Whether he deserves forgiveness for his gambling or not, Pete Rose was an impact player at third base in the 70s and the poll's introduction doesn't even mention him.

I liked baseball back then (70s) as the players stayed with a team for a while. Since I never had a good memory, that helps. 😀

I'll admit that I'm among the crowd that says he should stay banned.
Having said that, I don't dispute his greatness as a player. I forgot that he played third base!

Yep, for the second half of the decade. That's my most vivid memory of him on the field as I'd not been following baseball much until a co-worker organized a group outing to Candlestick Park. I'll never forget the boos he got (a sign of respect for a formidable opponent) and his slashing a double into the left field corner. That game rekindled my appreciation for the sport. Ended up buying partial season ticket packages for the next couple of decades. Seat license fees and full-season-only tickets at Pac-Bell (now AT&T) ended that for me.

Ichiro closing on Rose' record: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/16198037/pete-rose-counting-ichiro-suzuki-japan-hits-record
For the record, I don't think he's the MLB hit leader, but maybe the world baseball hit leader for sure. He's been amazing. 1200 in Japan and nearly 3000 here.

I've always said that (other than the two years he played in the Bronx) Ichiro was (and still is) my favorite player who didn't wear Yankee pinstripes. I'm rooting for him to get to 3000 hits on this side of the pond!

Rose isn't too happy about anyone saying that Ichiro beat his record, saying the Japan league is like the minors. Rose said that if you count Ichiro's Japan hits, we might as well count minor league hits here.
I won't knock Rose's achievement, he stayed healthy for 24 years and played consistent average baseball like Jeter ;-). Ichiro played 16 above average years in the MLB and proved himself as HoF worthy. Rose could act a tad more classy, let people have their opinions, pat Ichiro on the back, congratulate him, and move along. No need to try and knock the guy's accomplishment. He's displaying his jealousy when he tries to discredit the achievement.

Let's talk minor league baseball!
Tonight is opening night for the Tri-City ValleyCats (Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, short-season NY-Penn League), and I'm going after work!
It might be the minors, and it might be short-season, but Opening Night is Opening Night!
Can't wait!

My son played his first season of T-ball this spring (just ended last week) and that was the first opening day I have ever been to. I had a blast watching him get his first hit, first RBI, first run, first catch all and that stuff. If they gave trophies for loudest parents during the season, I'd get one for sure!
Have a great time!

Was flipping channels last night, and saw that SNY was showing minor league baseball. Curious, I tuned in, and was surprised to see that they were showing my hometown Tri-City ValleyCats playing the Brooklyn Cyclones.
I understand the game went 17 innings (no, I didn't stay up for all 17). I understand the 'Cats won, 10-9. And I also heard that of Brooklyn's four games so far this season, three of them have gone to extra innings (including a 20 inning affair for their opening day)!
Who says minor league baseball isn't interesting?

Speaking of minor league baseball and making a wild swing over into SF / Fantasy, reading an interesting alternate history book that follows around a fictional minor league team shortly after the Great Depression.
The House of Daniel, by Harry Turtledove
If you're a baseball fan, you might find it a fun read. He keeps the Fantasy / SF bits in the background mostly (vampires, werewolves, zombies, magic? All real.) It's written in a first-person point-of-view of a minor league player with a travelling team.

Boy, I go on vacation for a week, and this thread is just as quiet as when I left it.
Speaking of vacation, I made sure I got my baseball fix while away. I managed to catch a CanAm league game -- Les Capitales de Québec. Neat little ballpark, and the fans were really into it!
They were playing a team from Rockland County, NY (I didn't know there was a CanAm team in New York State!). The visitors even had "NEW YORK" on their jerseys. I was admittedly torn as to what team to root for! 🙂

Came across this interview, and thought people would find it interesting: 30 Seconds with Cal Ripken, Jr.

That's easy. Definitely not the New York team...
I've been busy lately and only watching baseball through the news 🙁
I did, however, get to watch the homerun derby 2 nights ago. It was way more fun with a click involved, more action, less taking on pitches. Now the camera guys have to learn how to keep up. They follow a ball into the stands and as soon as it lands, there's another ball in the air they have to find.
I remember saying the All Star game needed consequences, did you guys know that the winner gets home field advantage in the World Series?
