Talking baseball

  • I think some can. Certainly the hand eye coordination to hit is important. Now, can he adjust his swing, especially when the ball has strange motion. Not sure how much those cricket balls curve, but some of the curves/sliders/breaking balls look very weird when they come at you.

I think the first time a cricket player steps into the batter's box and sees a good breaking ball he will hit the ground. Many years ago I faced some mediocre curve balls that caused my knees to buckle.

  • First time, sure. But after a couple days, he'd be used to it. Somewhat.

People still bail out. Lefties mess with me (I bat left), but I've hung in on some. I start looking for the right curves at times, since they're a good one to swing hard on.

  • Personally, I would have trouble with T-ball. My hand eye coordination is bad at best and I have a poor spatial sense.:-D

  • Other than getting use to the rule differences and swing mechanics it shouldn't be too bad of a transition from cricket to baseball. Perhaps if they were a bowler (cricket-pitcher?) transitioning to overhand mechanics of baseball, that might prove to be difficult.

When I think of facing a pitcher and "hanging in there" as you watch a baseball fly at your face only to curve at the last moment, I think of John Kruk facing Randy Johnson during the all-star game. Too funny, I envision myself in Kruky's shoes facing Aroldis Chapman, our modern day Big Unit. (side note, Ray- Yankees picked him up!)

I signed my son up for t-ball this coming spring. I cannot wait to watch him play, I hope he loves the game as much as I do! I also volunteered for the scorekeeper position as I'm hoping to fulfill my dream of building a custom sports statistics tracking web app. The database portion is easy enough, my trouble will be with the programming. Wish me luck!

  • Tigers sign Justin Upton (6 years, $132.75M), just shows how badly Illitch wants to win a World Series.

If (a big "if") everyone stays healthy that's a pretty potent lineup: Kinsler, Upton, Miggy, Victor, J.D. Martinez, Castellanos, McCann, Iglesias, Gose.

Yep, I was aware about Chapman! 🙂 I'm a little leery, given the charges against him, but we got him without giving up a lot. He came cheap. If he works out, great. If not, we still have Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller. It's a win-win either way.

I actually toyed with the idea of creating a scorekeeping app (I like to keep score at games; I'm one of those people you'll see at the ballpark who has a scorecard in front of him). Maybe if I ever find the ambition to do so, I might look into it!

    I'm excited.

We're taking a family trip to Orlando at the end of March, going to drive over to Lakeland to catch a Tigers spring training game at Joker Marchant Stadium.

  • For those of you who are counting, Spring Training begins in . . .

I've been hearing those sounds all winter (coaching a youth travel team - we have indoor practices and play in an indoor league). I have a couple 12-year-olds who's pitching has been clocked in the low-to-mid 60's, not bad at this age.

  • It was nice to drive home from work Tuesday and hear a Spring Training game on the radio.

  • Have to say I'm less excited this year. Between not playing (time, shoulder), and the Rockies not looking good, I'm a little down.

    🙁
