Memories....
Registered last night for the new season, getting excited though no practices yet, and I'll miss opening day with a long trip to the UK.
BTW, anyone think Pujols for Howard is a good deal?

Which one of the youngsters are you Steve?
Here the end of season is nigh. Second-to-last seniors practice tonight and last league game on Saturday (our second side against our first side). Man, I'm gonna miss it :crying:

#7 up front. I was an all-star catcher that year. A few years later my eyes went bad and I moved to 1B, outfield, and started my decline to mediocre, but fun-loving, teammate.

Mixed feelings about that one. I read somewhere a long time ago that the Yankees and Red Sox once considered trading Joe DiMaggio for Ted Williams, and they eventually nixed the deal. I kinda feel the same way about this one. Pujols is an icon in St. Louis. Will Howard be as beloved? Also, Philadephia can be a tough place to play. I've heard that Phillie fans make Yankee fans look tame.

I don't think it's a good deal. I heard that Pujols will get an A-Rod type deal and St Louis doesn't want to pay it. Philly could, if they chose to.
For the cities, I don't think it's a great deal, but I could see Pujols looking for it as it gets him to a bigger, albeit colder, market. Howard is liked in Phi, Pujols in STL

Howard is also from the St. Louis area - maybe a return of the native son?? Honestly, I can't see the Cards trading Pujols. He has stated he'd like to retire as a Cardinal. One team for an entire carrer is almost underheard of these days......

It's certainly rare to see someone stick with one team. Mauer looks like he will, Jeter, still a few guys that decide the most $$$ isn't the most important thing.
I thought Hampton coming to CO to pitch was dumb. He's from TX, and they offered him (HOU or TEX) $100mm to pitch there. CO did like $110, and he chose CO. Honestly, how much is enough?

With the Twins past history of keeping their dollars close I wouldn't count on Mauer sticking around yet.

Interesting read, based on the Pujols for Howard trade rumor

I think Mauer will stick. He's from the MN area, and wants to be there. I suspect there will be an issue with the player's union on the contract, but Mauer's rich. He doesn't need the money. I think MINN will pay more than they want to, but less than Mauer would get from NYY or someone else. And it will be a compromise for the union.

Mauer will definitely make his money no matter where he goes! I'm hoping he'll give the Twins a little hometown discount, but I think his main goal is to win titles. The Twins need to be able to prove they'll spend the money to build a team that can achieve that goal. Joe's definitely loved around the Twin Cities...if he leaves there may be riots... :w00t:

He'll get his money in MN too. Pohlads write checks when the baseball guys think the player is worth it. Puckett was the singularly highest paid player in the game at one point (until Mattingly overtook him.) I think they're getting a few longer term contracts nailed down so they can identify the budget for the next few years and then they can return to Shapiro and break the big number and years into specific dollars and seasons. They've got Span thru 15, Blackburn thru 14, Baker and Morneau thru 13, Nathan thru 12, Cuddyer and Kubel thru 11 which just leaves Slowey, Hardy, 2b, 3b, various youngsters, and a pile of relievers unsigned. I wonder if they try to get Slowey under contract now and then do Mauer and pretty much have their budget set for the next five years.

This Mauer kid might play. Good to see they're giving him a shot.
He's pretty much worth more to the Twins than anyone else, given the hometown angle, the new stadium that the people paid so much for, and the fact that until Morneau signed last year we haven't given a longer deal to one of these young outstanding guys since maybe Radke got four years in 01 or Hunter in 03. The payroll actually went down after Hunter and Santana left a couple years ago, and the money was put in a sock waiting for this day. It's good for the guy, the team and the league that they did this.
Next weekend the Gophers play a series at Target Field against someone (not sure who, but who cares really) and the Twins open up a couple days later. New stadium, good team, spring coming: Woot!
