Hi,
I have a High Spec test server with over one hundred DB's of various length. From EM on any of our machines (Reasonable Spec) It takes about 2 Minutes to open the Database Folder to work on particular DB's. Apart from the obvious (Moving DB's to other servers) is there any way of speeding up this process?

Are your DB's set to auto-close? It could be too that just the volume of DBs is causing this. Sounds like a good time to get coffee (or tea) .
Good Hunting!

Hi AJ,
Nope, Not set to Auto-Close and my advance Coffee brewing techniques require at least 7-8 Minutes. Perhaps if I set the DB's to Auto-Close I can get it up to the required time.

How many databases? I read somewhere that EM was not the way to go if you have very much databases in one instance...

may be start by analysing the problem from SQL Profiler - it can catch all requests to database from EM, then look what part of "opening process" takes the most time - and then you can be more precise in solving that problem (except from not using EM for large servers at all )?

Possibly you have a problem and then again probably you do not. If you have no problem once it is open then you probably do not have a problem. I would be interested to know what alternatives are availlable to using EM on large servers. I do not see any GUI tools that will let a DBA do what EM will let you do currently on the market. So whoever it was advising you not to use EM in large environments must be advising you to use SQL scripts to perform your Admin. Only the cosmically stupid would attempt to administer an MS SQL server using sql scripts. Before there was EM we used to have to do that and it not only meant that every administrative procedure had to be scripted, tested and its actions validated but that the chance for a major screw up at every operation increased dramatically. I would like to see where it was written that you shouldnt use EM for large servers because whoever wrote such garbage is obviously out of his mind!
