Hi,
I think the ipad has that cool fad factor, but still overpriced.
I am interested in buying one but I am on a budget , just wanted to hear what is other people's take on it. It is just for my family, that gives us ease of use, portability, reading, browsing and all that fun stuff.

Love my iPad, that screen's just bonkers.
Although, similar tablets would probably have found just as much use in my home.
The price of the Nexus 7 makes it hard to ignore.

I've got the Kindle Fire, it's great for what it does. I got mine at Christmas 2011, so I've had it for 8 plus months.
Email, web, some cute apps all work great. it's smaller and more portable than my wifes IPad. I carry mine more often than my laptop now.
battery lasts all day; 6 hours of continuous use including wireless for me. readig books, the web, PDF's are all very easy.
With Intermittent use, where i check my email a few times a day, and wander some web sites at lunch, the battery lasts 3 days.
My downsides:
my i wish it had an SD card port. i would really like to swap book or music libraries without plugging into a PC.
It does only have 8 gig, and 6 gig of tyhat you can use; so you can't carry tons of music or videos.
unless you root it, you are limited to specific apps, but the collection of applicaitons is enourmous. finding the right app, if you don't knwo the name, is a pain, because the app store presentation is a top 100 kind of thing...so if the right app isn't in the top 100, you need to search and dig.
when i read the SSC forums, neitehr the built in Silk browser, or another browser free fromt eh appstore , the Maxthon browser, do not put vertical/horizontal scroll bars on the {code} blocks, so you cannot see all the code.

If you've got long arms and short pockets it has to be the iPad the screen is fantastic and IMO its still the best to use tablet you can get however the Google Nexus 7 looks a bargain so much so that i'm going to get one for out and about use.
Don't think it will be long before there's an iPad nano if the nexus does take off

I'd probably go with a Nexus 7 right now, if budget's a consideration.
I'm still quite excited about Win8/Microsoft Surface (the Windows RT version) and may well hang on to see if we get a shake-up in the market + a new iPad in the Autumn.
Funnily enough, Engadget[/url] is reporting that the MRSP is going to be $199 - if so, that would make it incredibly compelling compared to the competition. They often run quite speculative sources, but it doesn't seem impossible given how keen MS is to get market share in the tablet space and following on from Google's heavy discounting...

I have an iPad, but none of the others...one thing to note is you plan on allowing your family to use it also. There is only one account on an iPad. So if you connect your email to it, everyone can see your emails and send from your account. Likewise, there aren't separate files, so if you save a document everyone has access to it. Photos, the same....music...yep everyone accesses the same photo and music storage.

I have a Galaxy 10.1, but I hear they can't sell those any more in most markets, till the lawyers are rich enough ... er ... the lawsuit is resolved and justice is done. Whatever.
Anyway, it rocks.
I think if you want to watch a lot of video/movies, or play a lot of games, then the larger size is an advantage. For surfing some sites, the larger screen works better, but for most it's unimporant, since you end up zooming in anyway. For reading, a smaller size would be better, because the size of the screen doesn't matter much, but the weight sure does.
No matter what type you get, it will be both useful and fun. And the features will be obsolete by the time you walk out of the store with it, or by the time the package arrives if you buy online. So don't worry about cutting-edge, just get something that fits your budget and has a size appropriate to what you'll use it for. Simple as that.

I've been very happy (mostly) with my Toshiba tablet. But if the Surface comes out at $199, and it's a good form factor, plenty of memory, I think I'll upgrade & hand the Droid off to Mrs. Scary.
I'm on my 3rd tablet. iPad 1, Acer & Toshiba. Replaced the iPad with the Acer because I'm in love with the Droid OS. The Acer got replaced the day I bounced it off the ground so hard it was never the same. It still works mind you. My daughter has been using it for 18 months, no problems (except it doesn't turn on & off well and flexes in funny ways in your hands due to being in a couple of pieces). Toshiba has been good except for the occasional crash and the browser can act funny at times, even after the latest update.
Of the 3, the iPad really is the most solidly built, but it was kind of slow & underpowered. It's browser could act really wonky at times too. I've loved the Droid OS and it's tight integration with my phone (without the dangers of the type of integration that you get with iPhone/iPad).

Depends on what you want. These are all consumption devices, IMHO, with little work being done on them. I have the iPad 1, works fine, but I don't love it. I tend to use my phone more than the iPad to do stuff because it's very convenient.
The Fire is nice and small. My wife loves hers, but she reads and does a few games and that's about it.
The Nexus looks nice, but haven't seen one.
I have tried a few Android tablets in the store as well as the iPad/Fire and the browsers on all of them flake at times. Course, since the browsers on my laptops sometimes flake, I'm not sure it's that much worse.
Surface is interesting, we'll see about the cost.

I bought my wife the new iPad and the display is nothing short of amazing and it's very responsive but you'd think at that price apple would include something as simple as a flash. Great product.
My kids have the fire and they are nice. Maybe more for younger kids that read a lot.
I've had the Motorola Xoom for almost a year and love it. It has everything that other tablets don't but its not as responsive as others, even after upgrading to jellybean.
A coworker has the nexus 7 and its really nice and probably the best for the money IMO.

Flash is never simple. Given the frequency of updates for my PC, I wish it were never in use anywhere.

Sorry, I meant a camera flash. I know people don't buy a tablet to take pictures but my xoom has a camera flash (yes, I've used it!) and it's older but the new ipad doesn't. My wife likes to take those on-the-spot kid pictures and they tend to be on the darker side due to not have a camera flash.

Flash is definitely needed. The low light performance of iOS cameras leaves a lot to be desired.
