T-sql OrderBy

• Hello,

I want the ORDER BY for the below SQL as to display NONE in the first row and then the remaining values.

IF OBJECT_ID('TempDb..#Temp1') IS NOT NULL

DROP TABLE #Temp1

CREATE TABLE #Temp1(SourceA varchar(5))

INSERT INTO #Temp1

VALUES

('A')

,('B')

,('C')

,('D')

,('D')

,('E')

,('F')

,('G')

,('M')

,('N')

,('N')

,('N')

,('W')

,('Y')

,('Z')

SELECT * FROM #Temp1

UNION

SELECT ISNULL(NULL,'NONE') AS 'SourceA'

DROP TABLE #Temp1

OUTPUT as:

NONE

A

B

C

D

E

F

G

M

N

W

Y

Z

Thanks in advance!

• This?

; WITH CTE AS

(

SELECT DISTINCT SourceA

FROM #Temp1 T

UNION

SELECT 'NONE' AS 'SourceA'

)

SELECT *

FROM CTE C

ORDER BY CASE WHEN C.SourceA = 'NONE' THEN 1 ELSE 2 END , C.SourceA

• Or this?

SELECT CASE WHEN SourceA IS NULL THEN 'NONE' ELSE SourceA END

FROM #Temp1

GROUP BY SourceA WITH ROLLUP

ORDER BY SourceA

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh!

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Need to UNPIVOT? Why not CROSS APPLY VALUES instead?
Since random numbers are too important to be left to chance, let's generate some!
